We live in strange times. There is still brand loyalty among old gearheads. GM still owns the rights to the name. Marketing in modern times is not in the same market as it was, brand identity is in crisis (IMHO). If things are in the doldrums, why not light a firecracker and throw it over the fence, so to speak.

I was thinking I should message him and see if he knows more than the article says. Seems crazy that GM would do that. It's not April fools, so we can rule that out.
And yes, I got to visit Diego in Phoenix this winter and saw his very cool Pontiac project car. 68 Catalina 2 door post 428 4 speed, California car, needs restored but runs and drives.
