Beaumont AM/FM Radio

I found this picture online. At first I assumed it was a GTO or Lemans AM/FM. Then I thought maybe a Beaumont AM/FM accessory radio. Now I don't know any more. The FM slider bar doesn't say BEAUMONT or PONTIAC, it says STEREO. I've never seen one like this before. Anyone? Aftermarket reproduction slider bar maybe?

Sadly one accessory book I don't have is 1966. the 1967 book does a lot of 1966 accessories as well and they list AM/FM accessory radio packages for 1967 Beaumont but not 1966. Crazy thing is, the 1965 accessory book lists an AM/FM for Beaumont as well, so you would think there was one for 1966 too. Not much doubt all of them will simply be the GTO or Lemans AM/FM with the "PONTIAC" slidebar.

When inquiring about the stereo in my 66 Cadillac, was told the only place that had stereo in 1966 was California. The rest was in mono. Wonder what speaker orientation it has. The Caddy has a speaker at each side of the dash. Had one in the past that was am/fm mono. That only had a single speaker in the center.

FM radio, as Big Bear said, was very limited in range. Usually line of sight from a big tower in a big city.

Looking at my 1967 Delco Service Manual (Canadian edition), they not only did radios for GM cars, but also for Chrysler, Imperial & Lincoln. Yes, they did a twin-control AM radio for limousines (AM, ha ha, seems quaint now). Back in the day AM radio was King. Top 40 and all.

As Carl noted, there seems to be inconsistency in the am/fm radio availability for the Canadian Beaumonts & Chevelles. From what I see in my Delco manual, the only am/fm for Beaumonts would say "PONTIAC" on the slider bar. FM radios sold like cardboard back in 1967 due to lack of stations. Starting 1968 they offered am/fm radios from the factory for Beaumonts. From then on with each passing year FM became exponentially more popular.
