I'm not a bodyman but...

I'm a bit unsure about the quality of the repair on this wagon I'm stripping for parts.

Looks like I did that 30 years ago, but I've never been to Canada as of yet......

It's a vintage repair that makes me think of a vintage movie with a vintage actor: The War Wagon with Kirk Douglas.

I remember a bodyman who worked for Jadco, one of the Stelco Steel supporting businesses. They called him Ivan The Terrible, because of his bodywork. He must have bought bondo in 50 gallon drums. I remember when he painted a brand new '77 Chevy Big Dually pickup in the company gold colour it turned out with the texture like an orange. Its like he didn't understand line pressure, fan pattern, distance from the painted surface... Hey, the fleet all ended up in corporate colours and were basically smooth, even if bondo was 2" thick. It was far easier to fill an irregular surface with bondo than to use a hammer & spoon or puller first. Who cared? Nobody ever cut & polished his paintwork, these were work trucks.

Just for fun you should take it to a paintless dent removal guy and film the reaction.

On the plus side, it looks like there was ample profile for the bondo to adhere to

You gotta admit whoever did this was good at shaping Bondo!

Back in the 60s, the local body shop guy in Enmore, PEI was asked to paint a 1956 Chevy 4 door. It had been bought from a Toronto dealer, had a rough Orange paint job, bright orange hides a lot of sins. While sanding a back door, he went right through the coat of bondo. The door had been stuffed fuel of newspaper to hold the bondo in place.

I bought a 72 Celica like that, was bought for parts and started looking at 1/4 panel, looked pretty thick. Didn't look like they made any attempt to pull dent.
Took the sledge hammer to it and bondo was 1-3/4 inches thick. Bondo probably cost more than what I paid for car, LOL.

I knew a guy who would drink a can of beer, flatten it when he was done and proceed on the bodywork. You know how you find discarded build sheets in cars? With this guy you'd find his beer cans behind it all. The bodywork looked nice after paint, but after a winter or 2 I'd be curious to see the results.

Back around 1980 my brother owned a '71 Monte Carlo. A truck at work backed into him, nailing the trunk lid. Well wouldn't you know under the Sandalwood paint the bondo was actually 2" thick! It is a wonder the counterbalance rod could keep the trunk lid open. It also destroyed the dealer emblem, the used car dealer that was responsible for the expert body & paint. Shysters! It didn't look bad, but 2" of filler? If you brought a magnet and it didn't stick, I'll bet the salesman in the loud jacket, without missing a beat would claim it has a Corvette Fiberglas body. rofl.gif

Wasnt there a high dollar car that burnt up after being sold at a Barrett Jackson auction and after the bondo burnt up, there were big holes in the body? Maybe a real nice looking 1956 Chevy?

What year did Bondo enter this world? I would imagine it was harder to do crappy repairs before it was invented! "Look at the lead in this car. It's 2" thick!" lol
