Need wiring help for my car trailer winch


I have a Badland 12,000 lb winch I mount on my car trailer to load cars. It's a great winch, pulls anything onto the trailer but I have a minor glitch with it and I can't figure it out.  Sometimes when I hit "IN" on the rocker switch it will take 4-5 tries before it will engage the solenoid and the winch starts to pull. "OUT" works perfect every time. 

I tested the switch and when I hit "IN" it has continuity every time, so the issue must be in the solenoid box. 

My question is this. Why does the plug on the end of the cable from the rocker switch have 5 wires at the solenoid box end? The rocker end of the cable only has 3. Red is power, blue is "IN", black is "OUT" on the winch motor. What do the other 2 wires on the 5 pin plug do?

I haven't taken the cover off the solenoid box yet but if I can't figure out what those other 2 pins are, that is the next step. It's not big deal to do that but I thought someone might have experience with this? Maybe they just used a 5 pin connector but it only has 3 wires going to it?

long shot but try some contact cleaner even though they look clean sometimes theirs the smallest film that give that intermediate problem in my experiences from work with our work trailer with winch

You mean on the hand held control, or the solenoid box? The rocker switch on the handle held control tests perfect every time, so I think the problem is farther down the line. 

I didn't have time to work on it today and won't likely for about a week but your idea about a dirty contact certainly makes sense, I just have to figure out where it is dirty. 

When it was new it was perfect but over the 10 years or so that I've had it, the problem slowly gets worse.

where the hand held plugs in and may as well clean any connection you can see just make sure to disconnect the power intel it is fully dry.

i tend to use the crc Electronic Cleaner as it washes away any green corrosion but any cleaner should help

I still haven't had time to work on it, hopefully tomorrow. 

I have been very careful with this winch. It's always been stored in the garage, under a plastic cover. It's only on the trailer when I'm loading. I see guys who leave them out in the weather 24/7 but it's never even sat outside overnight. It still looks brand new basically and it's likely pulled 40-50 cars onto the trailer over the years.

So far I'm stumped on the circuitry but once I open up the box maybe it will make sense.
