Time to make some big decisions about the forum

As some of you may know I used Photobucket extensivly for the first 12-13 years to host photos used on the forum. This includes feature cars. I got an email from Photobucket notifying me of changes to their user agreement. The changes they are making are very concerning including a section about biometrics. Here's an excerpt:

By agreeing to this Biometric Policy you grant Photobucket, to the extent permitted by the laws of your region, the right to sell, lease, trade or otherwise profit from the disclosure of your Public User Uploaded Content which may contain Biometric Information that may be extracted.

2. DEFINITIONS

Biometric Information Definition: Biometric Information refers to data that depict or describe physical, biological, or behavioral traits, characteristics, or measurements of or relating to an identified or identifiable person’s body. Biometric Information includes, but is not limited to, depictions, images, descriptions, or recordings of an individual’s facial features, iris or retina, finger or handprints, voice, genetics, or characteristic movements or gestures (e.g., gait or typing pattern). Biometric Information also includes data derived from such depictions, images, descriptions, or recordings, to the extent that it would be reasonably possible to identify the person from whose information the data had been derived. By way of example, both a photograph of a person’s face and a facial recognition template, embedding, faceprint, or other data that encode measurements or characteristics of the face depicted in the photograph constitute Biometric Information. There are different definitions for biometric information, or biometric data, under different state laws. Within this Biometric Policy we generally adopt the Federal Trade Commission’s (“FTC”) definition. If you would like to opt-out from granting Photobucket the right to sell, lease, trade or otherwise profit from Biometric Information contained in your Public User Uploaded Content. Opting out requires account deletion.

While most of the photos I have stored are cars I'm still disturbed about this policy. Therfore I'm cancelling my Photobucket account. I have 90% of the images on there stored locally however it'd take me months to replace all of the hosted photos on threads with images from my computer.

This has me wondering if I should look at transferring the whole forum to another platform, one that has more features and looks better on a cell phone. I'm looking at Vbulletin Cloud. It's about half the cost of this platform and being on the cloud means they will look after security. I've sent them an email asking if they can migrate all the data from this board to their platform but I have my doubts. What I could do is have both sites up and running and we could slowly move the most informative threads manually to the new site.

There's a good chance all login data would be lost meaning members would have to re-register.

I welcome your thoughts and suggestions on this.

We could stay where we are but lose quite a few old images or

Move to a new platform with better features, be cell phone friendly, cost half as much (meaning I don't have to ask for donations as often) but potentially lose quite a few old threads and require everyone to re-register

We'd also likely lose our search relevence on Google etc so we may be harder for newbies to find than the existing forum.

I'd say as images hosted by the site are mostly automobile and related, and in public domain, speaking for myself if it were my site, I'd not worry about where and how they get used.

It's certainly good and honorable to say enough is enough, but my feeling is we are way past the point of no return with these things.

We'd miss some of the older images in posts, but If you can save a substantial amount by switching over to another host, and one that might have a more up-to-date interface and one that you don't feel pressured by, then maybe it's time?

No matter what, losing either old threads or old photos, it's not a good option. There's so many good technical threads on here that I know I refer to often and I also send links to guys who have questions that can be answered by reading those threads.

Bottom line though is you have to do what is best for you Todd, this is your site.

Forgot to mention I pay Photobucket about $200/year to host my photos.

To me..its like building a car. You can take suggestions...but the final decision is yours. Its your time/effort and money and we all know you put in a lot of all of them. I'd do whatever makes you feel the best and don't worry about us. We'll all tag along no matter what... How many times have you moved in your life? Maybe it's time to move???

Start a thread where we can vote on this or as Jim said, "the final decision is yours." My vote is for a move and at the same time, maybe add an annual membership fee if you feel it is needed? Just a thought.

I agree with the others in that it's really up to you, Todd.  You know more about this than any of us (perhaps all of us put together... ;) ), and I trust that any decision you make will be the right one.  I have to say the decreased cost must be attractive, especially given the financial strains that the site has created for you recently.

Random thoughts:

- Obviously the best outcome would be better functionality, decreased cost, while keeping all existing content.  However if that's not possible, could the current board be archived (like in text or pdf form?) or at least all of the valuable tech/history information, and linked to on a new board?

- I am a little afraid for the future of our society as our personal images, data, information continues to be further monetized (and claimed ownership of, in the form of long, complicated user agreements that most people don't have the patience or desire to wade through) by corporations who do not have our best interests in mind.  Photobucket seems to be the latest version of this, but are there any guarantees that the new platform will not have similar practices buried within their contract?

- I'm not sure how much of a problem it would be for random car pics on a messageboard, but this definitely cements my resolve to not post personal photos online.  Who knows where this is going?  Also, given how certain 'stock photo' companies have hijacked ownership of peoples' personal photos, and then attempted to fine anybody using those photos, I have definitely developed a resentment of such practices and all companies who participate.

Best of luck with your decision!

I agree with most of what has already been said by others. Is there benefit in checking with other administrators for other similar sites to see what they use? I'm wondering about sites like Chevy Talk and others that are much larger. I'm not opposed to paying a membership fee, especially if it allows you/us to find a solution that provides for information from this site to be imported to a new one. Ultimately, it's your decision Todd. If you'd like, I can also pick the brains of web guys I know and work with to see if any of them have suggestions that might work for this application.

Please don't take this as a knock;

Wow;
You might be the only person I have read as having kept photobucket after they changed to a paid service;
I totally get why they did it, but it pissed me off when they did, and how they did it.

My guess is that only the stuff you have uploaded to PB is there, the rest (unless you programmed the site this way) should be hosted by your the same servers that this site is run on.

I hope that when you make a decision, you are at peace with it.

Use postimages with a tool embedded for users to add their image. (postimages.org/) but the tool can be embedded easily so the user just clicks upload an image.
If you move over, Im sure the new hosting or forum hosting uses webimages also.
Its free, and a lot of other forums use it now.

i would also switch over to where something is more easily manageable/accessible in hopes to regain your Adsense account back as well.

Maybe something like the Old Car Manual Project for all the old site information?

I know absolutely nothing what this suggestion means. Or what all the options are, I just believe photobucket are proven greedy thieves from long ago.

I should add, a membership fee for an established site like this should not be an issue. I see other sites charging that don't have the comradery and content this site has.

Great comments guys. I'm completely against what Photobucket wants to do and states that if you don't comply with this your gone. I could see them doing this with free members however I pay a fairly high fee each year so I should have the option of not having my images used for profit. I'm going to investigate how hard it would be to download the images I had for CP on Photobucket. I'd be ok with having an overlap of this forum and a new forum for say a couple of months so we could move important threads over to the new system. From what I understand the forums like Vbulletin allow memberships and other interesting features to make the experience much more enjoyable.

As much as old guys like me don't like change, it sounds like it needs to happen. Tally ho! Up, up and away!

Todd, another site I frequent is Continous Wave, a site for Boston Whaler boats. The site owner did an upgrade a few years back and somehow did an archive of the old sites posts and images, they still appear in Google searches while all the new posts appear in the new forums.

This is a post on the old site that I have bookmarked.

Interesting Don. I'm going to do some investigating on the weekend on ways to move this forum to a new one.

Hard to have a knowledgeable opinion for future server but the value of the old posts is incredible.

Last weekend at the Dorchester car show there were 3, 1969 427 B-bodies and Chevelle with a 427.

Also, the 1969 Impala SS-427, 4-speed re-builder was there. He has owned that car for 50 years.

Right together, factory 335, 390 and 425 horse cars.

Tonnes of 427 questions.

Lot of people did not know the 335 horse motor exhisted.

The best answers are here at CP.

A google search and near the top this 13-year-old post comes up.

What's the difference between 335 and 390hp 427s in 1969? - Canadian Poncho (activeboard.com)

Pretty cool Todd !
