Old car prices are starting to drop.


Just in the past couple of days I'm seeing prices being reduced on some of the old cars on Facebook Marketplace here in PEI. Some of these cars have been on there for months (T-bird , Valiant). The Strato Chief for about a month. Are you guys seeing the same where you are?

No question about it, lately I also have seen some cars not selling that I thought would sell easily, and still for sale even after price reductions.

Certainly seeing a change in old and new vehicle prices, 0% financing or reduction in prices on pickups of $10-15,000, plus a large increase in lot inventories for new and used. Could be a lot of model year leftovers and deals this fall. Covid and parts shortages caused a 20-30% rise in vehicle prices, some of that is coming back to earth.

I've noticed that too, but I'm not sure we're quite back to pre-covid levels yet.  I'm guessing we will be soon, though, if the economy continues to be as bad as it has been, or continues to worsen (as appears to be the case).  There are other factors involved as well, as we of the 'car guy' generation age, and with enthusiasm among young people being generally low.  Also attitudes about the environment have changed which also has a negative effect on the old car hobby (IMHO).

No matter the hobby, cards, comics, cars. I think the prices are coming down as well. People were bored during Covid. Bumped it up, and now reality is kicking in. Doesnt matter the hobby, ya the popular cars, cards, comics etc, are still worth high dollar and people are paying market. But the average of others in trend is stabilizing. Why would I spend $6000 on a rust bucket, with rotted out frame for an unpopular car, when you can go out west or to the US spend a bit more or same price and have something solid.
I would buy a 2 door 71 Ford LTD again, or a 78 New Yorker. But I dont feel the prices are market for the majority. And there are many 78 New Yorkers that have been for sale for over 3 months.

That list of cars are not the most sought after that's for sure. The only one that would garner any interest i and drive the prices ups the T bird, but then again it's not a desirable one.
I think the whole old car/parts market is very slow, almost dead on some things. But the trends are changing as the desirable cars are declining, either bought, wrecked or parts are drying up.
Big block Chevy parts...can't find any of the hipo parts. They are being horded, if they are for sale the price is unreasonable. Then I have 2 sets of BB valve covers for sale, I thought the price was, in the middle to low range, have not seen a chrome set for sale in Ontario in a while,...... not even one response.

"Old car prices are starting to drop" may have a lot to do with changing trends and the "new" desirable cars. I noticed in Florida this year at a show with over 600 cars, the amount of Nova's/Chevy II's was crazy, close to 40 cars!!! A few years ago there would have been less than 10. I also noticed very few "B body" Ponchos and Chevs. Hopefully that will change and drive the prices up.. First it was Corvettes, then Chevelle's, Camaro's, LS conversions.....

I think a large part of this is the fact that the demographic that would purchase the cars is dying off.

 I checked what most would consider a desirable musclecar (70 LS5 Chevelle) and Hagerty is showing an almost 5% drop in current valuation

A 70 Roadrunner with a 383 has dropped 8%.

Are those Cdn or US dollars, Todd?

IMHO, in either currency almost $50K for a #4 condition Chevelle is crazy.  Prices have to come down a whole lot before the average person can shell out $50K in today's economy for what amounts to a restoration project that you will have to throw another $50K into.  Or just buy the finished product for $108K, not knowing what hides under the shiny paint, or what kind of mechanic did the work.

Perhaps I'm being over nostalgic, but when I got into the hobby, the cars could be found for prices that allowed it to be a hobby.  You could do most of the work yourself, but even the stuff that most of us can't or won't do, like paint, was expensive but not crazy expensive.  Now, if I'm going to invest $100K into something, I'm getting a loan, and it's now an investment vs a fun old car to tinker with.

I suppose that's why, if I ever become active in the hobby again, it will be with a basically original, non-popular 4-door or something.

Then, there is the draw of newer muscle cars, which don't require the degree of repair and maintenance of the older stuff, that might be more amenable to an aging body that doesn't enjoy crawling underneath a car so much anymore.

The hobby is changing, and surely the drop in prices will make it easier to participate for many.  It will also cause a drop in the investment aspect as well, though people won't get the money out that they put in... but then hobbys have never been free, they should just be affordable.

That's my nickel... can't do 2 cents anymore since we no longer have pennies...

Those are US prices Mark. I agree. I couldn't imagine paying that kind of $ for a #4 condition car but apparently some folks will.

Youre right!  Pricing is determined by the market, but that market no longer includes me.  ;)

Maybe it will again as prices continue to come down.  :)

I will add that if a person had held onto their old cars, which I didnt, they would have retained the equity to buy something different as they sold or traded what they had.

I've noticed a change...but it seems to be more in the lower $$$ bracket cars. The "driver" market. The higher end full resto seems to still have the same price tag or close to it. At the end of the day I think it's the lower market that is sliding down. Money is tighter for people on the bottom end. Just my thoughts...
