Shawn Stoddart is the owner of this 1969 Beaumont Custom. The car was originally owned by a good friend of his. The story behind this car is a sad one however it's great to know this Beaumont is in good hands under Shawn's care. Here's the details as told by Shawn:

My 1969 Beaumont was purchased new in Calgary Alberta at Stampede Pontiac. It is a 2 door hardtop Custom that was ordered with 350 L48 300 hp 4 bolt engine, Muncie M20 4 speed and 12 bolt rear end. The engine was replaced at some time with a 71 350 truck engine when one of the first 2 owners had it.

It came with the vinyl roof chrome but never had the vinyl roof. Most of the original parts are still on the car. The car was purchased by a close friend of mine Cole Muenchrath in the mid 90’s. He had the rear fender flares removed that were installed previously. The car was then painted to the original colour. During Cole’s ownership the brakes were done and interior upholstery was redone.

Original 14” ET mags, new tires, and air shocks were also added. He even installed a mint period correct 8 track player. Cole only drove the car 4700 miles from the time he bought the car until his passing after a long battle with cancer in early 2020.

Cole was a history and an antique buff so he meticulously maintained the car and did everything as close to original as possible. I purchased the car from his estate after Cole passed and have recently disassembled the steering and suspension to upgrade to a power disc brake set up and UMI tubular suspension.

My plan in the future is to restore the car completely as finances allow. This winter the engine and transmission will be removed to detail the engine bay and rebuild the power train. My goal is to keep the car looking original with updated parts for better performance and drivability. It currently has 81000 miles and I plan to enjoy it as long as I can to keep my friends memory alive.

Thanks for featuring the car. It means a lot to me and to Cole’s family to keep the car on the road for Cole as it was his pride and joy. He was only 42 when he passed.

Thanks everyone. Ive wanted a 68 or 69 chevelle because my parents had one when I was a kid. I never even knew what a Beaumont was until i met Cole. Love this body style and it means more to me than money can buy. I am waiting for some suspension parts so hopefully Ill have it back on the road soon.

First of all, congrats on being on the top of the page this month. Your car is beautiful! The colour is on-spec Warwick Blue, AKA Dusk Blue.

I love Beaumonts and I love seeing them with unusual features or equipment. The L48 4-speed combo is one of the best all-around drivetrains that year, with Muncie & 12-bolt. It may be the best compromise, with guts, smooth running, quite reasonable fuel economy, and it isn't a shoehorned-in massive chunk of nose-heavy iron like a big block. At 300 horsepower and a 10.25:1 compression they had punch. With the original L48 having been replaced by a lower compression truck 350 you shouldn't have to deal with high compression detonation, a real problem on today's fuel. They are often 4-bolt mains, like your original L48 was.

When you say truck 350, do you mean light duty as in 1/2 to 1-ton, or do you mean medium duty as in up to 2.5 tons? Factory light-duty 2-barrel truck engines had common 1.94" intake valves and were like passenger car engines, but ironically the 4-barrel 350 truck (both light & medium) engines had puny 1.72" intake valves (like a 307 or inline six). "Truck", as in medium-duty truck means governed to lower rpm range, and moving freight means much of the time a heavy foot, hence smaller valves & carbs for limited r.p.m. economy & life. Think 2-barrel versions of 348, 366 V8s, GMC V6s, even Ford 360 (361), 390 (391), SD 477 & 534 V8s.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend Cole. Losing friends this way really sucks. In no small way you are keeping your personal memory of him alive in you via this car.

It is interesting but not surprising by the sound of your story, that Cole being the historian he was, left the unusual D99 mouldings in place on the car. Today most anyone would remove them, but Cole seemed to recognize that unusual, almost regionally popular, option.

E-T mags were one of my favourites back in the day, when you could run out to Parkdale Performance Centre (insert YOUR local speed shop here) and get a set of E-T I, E-T II, E-T III, E-T IV, or E-T Super mag wheels. Even Canadian Tire started selling them the year your Beaumont was made. Although they may seem puny today, a set of 1-piece polished aluminum 5-slot 14x7 dished wheels looked great on the right car, such as yours. I can almost see white-lettered Polyglas GT's on it back in the day. I still think they'd look awesome on a '67 Impala SS. The Ansen Sprint was Ansen's version of your wheel.

Thanks very much. The engine is from a 70 half ton. Its a 4 barrel, 4 bolt main. It still runs fairly strong. The only trim that was removed but I still have was the side mouldings. The black rubber has shrunk and doesnt look good. I may restore it and reinstall it one day. I agree with the wheels, its like they were made for this car.

Congratulations on a great example of a 69 Beaumont! Back about 1972-1973 when I was working part time pumping gas at a local Supertest gas station, a customer there had almost the identical car to this, except it was a bench seat. He was the second owner, it was in pristine condition. We never realized then how rare these Beaumonts were.
