Need a couple of parts for my 94 Buick


Attention western members with good auto wreckers! I need a couple of parts for my 94 Buick Buick Park Avenue

I need a cannister purge solenoid as mine is tripping the MIL light. I called the local GM dealer an they are discontinued. There are no aftermarket ones I can find.

It appears it was only available from the dealer with the cannister. The GM part number is 17093147. It is located in the engine compartment on top of the vapour cannister. It looks very similar to this one.

I'd consider it with the cannister as well. 

I also need a working power antenna. Mine quit a week ago- it goes part way up but not down. I suspect the cord inside the mast has stripped or broken. 

I'd like to get these two parts soon as I have a potential buyer of the car.

I still need a cannister purge solenoid for my 94 Buick Park Ave. Same year Buick LeSabre and Olds 88 should work. PN is 17093147 and should be on the solenoid. It's located behind the drivers side headlight on top of the cannister.
There's no real panic as the car is in winter storage.
If you western guys are wandering around the local yards please take a look for me.

That's not the correct one Mark. According to the listing that one replaces PN 1997201 and mine is 170931 (at least that's the PN the GM dealer gave me but it might be part of the cannister)

I see what you mean Todd. It's not listed anywhere. And nary an image of it exists.

Question;

If you remove that solenoid, is it ported on it's base to the cannister. I'm assuming it is.

I believe it is. Every time the PCM activates cannister purge the Check Engine light comes on. If I disconnect it the light comes on right away. I can't stand having an engine light on unlike so many people I know who drive around with a Christmas Tree on their dash.

Todd, I'm thinking you could remove that defective solenoid, mcgiver the cannister to accept a outlet line, buy a 'new style" solenoid purge valve, install it in the "return to engine" line and it might work. Seems the two lead solenoids do not signal open or closed to the pcm. It's probably the vacuum being sensed (or not sensed in your case) downstream somewhere when the purge side opens.

Perhaps the very similar (minus solenoid) later design vapor can would fit in that body hole?  https://www.amazon.ca/Canister-%E2%80%8E911-261-Compatible-Roadmaster-Commercial/dp/B0B2NJD1XW

It looks to be that the the 94 Buick Park Ave (and others?) was a one or two year design can. The fuel vapor inlet looks to be integral, with the vacuum line "to engine" being solenoid ported into it. Did they do away with that style solenoid to streamline the part better across more models? The numbers for the later style are across most all GM's 95-99.

I did a search and didnt find your canister, but I did find a bunch of part numbers on this site. If you took the time to search the part numbers maybe you could get lucky.

I wonder if mine is unique as 94 was "OBD 1.5" whereas the plug is OBD 2 but the codes are OBD 1". I believe the PCM needs a certain resistance from the solenoid to determine if it's working. A wrong resistance creates a wrong voltage at the PCM and it creates a Quad Driver fault. I may be out to lunch but that's how I understand it. I think I'd need to make sure a replacement solenoid has the proper Ohm rating as mine. Obviously I can't measure mine as it's possibly defective. I'll have to reread the diagnostic tests in my shop manual to confirm but I don't recall seeing any ohm rating mentioned.

It appears Buick Lesabre solenoids are different than on the Park Ave - they used the common valve. It looks like Olds 98 has the same as mine in 1994 so if you see one of those in the junkyard please take a look.

I would be interesting to find a used and working 95 and up solenoid. Just to plug it in to see what happens. But I suspect you are right about measured resistance. It just couldn't be easy.

The solenoid is sealed. I assume there's an open or fused coil inside it. I'm thinking that if I got the more common cannister with the solenoid that has 2 ports I could make that work.
I was really worried that this fault would damage the ECM as on earlier ECM's quad faults would cause irreversable damage. Lucky for me the shop manual states that the quad drivers have built in circuit breakers to prevent damage. That removed the sense of urgency I had to repair it however as I stated earlier I can't stand engine lights being on.
