Question for Ebay sellers who put a reserve on their items

I haven't sold on Ebay for a few years. I have something to list which should bring around $500. Do they actually charge 7.5% on the item when I put a reserve on it? Plus another 13.25% on the total amount of the sale? I was reading on their home page and that is what I take from their overview.

No, that is unlikely as it's a manual pedal set that's for 1967-1968 US full size Pontiac models only.

But that's a pain if I'm taking parts across the border to ship them to someone in the US from ND. And I can ship from here for about 60 bucks so it's not worth the hassle for me to take them there to save maybe $25 on shipping.

As I mentioned buyers in the US will be reluctant to buy if it is coming from Canada they will trust that they're getting it if it's coming from the US address

I seem to recall you also pay a commission on the shipping fees.

And they set out how much the fees are too. Also I've heard complaints about people getting paid from Flbay after the sale, taking a long time, weeks in some cases.
sell the parts on one of the Poncho sites you frequent.
Flbay has been losing followers steadily, not the amount of product for sale or the or amount of sellers. That is why you have seen FB market place take off with users. Paypal is owned by Flbay for your information too, problems have risen with their stipulations, rules, for usage

I haven't sold on eBay since earlier this year (the Don Prudhomme Hot Wheels Funny Car), but I get paid for the item pretty much right away.  Also, eBay sold PayPal years ago.

Yes, eBay's fees have risen over the years, and yes their fees apply to shipping, but you've got a worldwide audience.  I state in my listings the item will ship from Canada via Canada Post, and adjust my shipping amount to account for the fees.  I get plenty of interest from the USA.

Carl, the percentages you quote seem high to me.  Call eBay customer service, they pick up right away and are very helpful.

So if someone with experience can help me, let's say I have an item I will list with a $600 reserve.

If it sells, will I not pay 13.25% final value fee as well as 7.5% fee because the listing has a reserve?

Reserve price
Set a minimum price that must be met for your item to sell

$5.00 or 7.5% of reserve price, whichever is greater (maximum fee $250)
Charged whether or not your item sells

Category

Insertion fee

Final value fee % + per order fee

Most categories, including Trading CardsCollectible Card Games, and eBay Motors > Parts & AccessoriesAutomotive Tools & Supplies, and Safety & Security Accessories. For vehicles, see our Motors fees.

First 250 listings free per month, then $0.30 per listing

  • 13.25% on total amount of the sale up to $7,500 calculated per item
  • 2.35% on the portion of the sale over $7,500

Your #'s for fees look correct, but instead of a reserve price you could maybe start with a higher listing price. I really suggest giving eBay a call for assistance.

How does eBay compare now for car selling compared to say Hemmings or Bring A Trailer?

I agree.... I no longer use a reserve price and hope for the best . ( Just adds to the sellers cost ) . I set a price I'm comfortable with ( or what the market is  ) , and add 10-15% to cover the eBay fees . Yes, eBay charges you fees on the shipping charge as well , so you should actually factor that in too....   On another note , you may find if you use a shipping service like " Secureship " they will find you the lowest shipping cost  amongst all the carriers , and 99% of the time UPS is the lowest by a long shot .... and will deliver in 4-5 business days once you drop it off at a UPS store . CanadaPost is just brutal ... costing at least 30-40% more and they take 2-3 times as long .
