Vehicle Report/Cowl Tag/Serial Number questions

I recently got my Vintage Vehicle Services report. The production date listed is two days later than that on the cowl tag. Is that unusual? The cowl tag has a six digit Body No. which doesn't match with the serial number or model number. What does it designate? At the bottom of the cowl tag is H35U80. Do each of these characters refer to one of the six options listed in the report? On the serial number plate, it reads G.M. Canada DD. What does the DD stand for?

That is not out of the ordinary. I've seen them the same day, 1 or 2 days apart. Not sure why that happens though. Someone here likely knows.

The cowl tag has a six digit Body No. which doesn't match with the serial number or model number.

That is totally normal. There is no correlation between the 2 other than where your GM docs will have all 3 of those numbers on the same page. I used to think the body numbers were perfectly in sequence from the day production started until I saw a GM document for a car built in February but yet the 6 digit body number was 000015.

What does it designate? At the bottom of the cowl tag is H35U80.

If you double check the tag it likely is M3 (Powerglide) and U80 (rear speaker)

Do each of these characters refer to one of the six options listed in the report? On the serial number plate, it reads G.M. Canada DD. What does the DD stand for?

Apparently it's for delivery date which the dealer was supposed to stamp on the tag when they delivered the car but they never did it.

Thanks so much, that clears up a few question marks. It looks as though the rear speaker option was missed on the report. My car also has a switch above the instrument panel for the rear speaker (front speaker/front & rear/rear). Would that have been included with the rear speaker option?

Yes, that is the correct switch. I am thinking there was a rear speaker accessory kit that the dealer installed (or the customer could buy it himself and install it). I can check the accessory book to make sure.

I believe the date on the trim tag is the shift number and date the body is pulled from the body bank. The finished car generally rolls off the line a day and a half later, if nothing needs rework.

My trim tag indicates the body left the bank 2nd shift, 12-13 (1966) and came off the line 12-15-66. The engine came from MacKinnon 12-12-66.

I just checked the accessory book and it does show a rear speaker accessory kit for 1966 full size Pontiacs. Either the dealer did that one in your car or someone along the way added it. It actually was very common in 1966 Pontiacs, I'm betting at least 1/3 of the Parisiennes and Grande Parisiennes I've looked at since I bought my first one in 1975 have had it.

Carl, you may want to edit your post from M3 (Powerglide) to M35 (Powerglide).

Better an M3 than a C4 (explosive). Nobody wants a transmission that grenades. smile

I wonder why Ford named their Cruise-a-matic C4? confuse

Errors like missed options and options that were never on the car and spelling errors are often seen on the GMVVS documents. Check out this beauty:

Wow that's an oldie. Was it done in the 80's? I have one from around 1990 and they were more professional looking by then.

Interesting. So, you can't assume that there's a speaker in every car that has the upper rear seat decorative grille. Might you post scans of that accessory book? (or is it in a previous post?)

I knew Roy Mercer, he was an older gentleman in the 90's. He retired around that time, so I would say he was mid 60's then. I helped him with some Corvette documentation that he was trying to qualify. Back then, most of the dealings were with WWII vehicles and the fifties era.
