66 and older 4 way flashers


So 66 and older have 4 way flashers available as an option or as an accessory. I have a pair of flasher units on the bench that were both originally factory installed in vehicles it appears. My Strato Chief has a factory installed 4 way flasher unit as verify by the tag with the option list on it. Unfortunately I'm not able to get into the car right now as it's up on the hoist and I can't open the doors to climb in. If I could, I may be able to solve this dilemma.

The 2 units I have on the bench are real simple to test. They simply plug into the connection where the factory directional signal switch plugs (2 "C" shaped connectors) into the main body harness on the car, and then the remaining orange wire plugs into a 12 volt live at the fusebox. 

Both the units I have flash the hazard lights perfectly when I plug them into the body harness and steering column on my Grande Parisienne. However, neither unit will flash the little bulb in the red push/pull knob when the hazards are activated. Both bulbs test positive on a battery so I know the bulbs are good. 

I see the hazard connectors have a gray wire in and out but neither the signal switch connector on the car nor the main body harness connector have a terminal in that port on the connector, rendering the gray wire useless because it plugs into a blank port.

Why is that gray wire there?

Is it the reason my bulb doesn't flash?

Never mind, problem solved but I'll leave this up here in case anyone else runs into this.

As I was typing the initial post, I had the idea that maybe the flasher needs to be mounted under the dash to ground it at which time the bulb would then work.

Tested it grounded, and yup!

Yup.   And the grey wire is for the gear indicator light on a column shift automatic.

Thank you. Totally makes sense. I know gray is almost always for a dash light of some sort but it didn't make sense to me, now it does. I was wondering why there was a blank port in my body harness connector.

I guess it's been a while since I had a column shift automatic Pontiac!
