RE: 427 4 speed 69 2+2

I, along with Mark, have been following the fortunes of Canadian Pontiacs for many years.  The fact of the matter is that there is a very limited market for these cars (we are all on this board!) and in general, Canadians are unwilling or unable to justify the full blown restorations costs that our cousins south of the border are willing to undertake.  I mean look at all of us on this board talking about doing this car but no one is able to step up to the plate! Part of the problem is our small market.  Canadian Pontiacs take a while to sell.  I had a 69 396 Safari wagon it took me forever to sell and it's not as if I was asking a lot of money for it or made anything on the sale.  Mark's 69 2 + 2 was for sale for quite a long time as well.  Someone who does up a "Bis-Quick" however knows that this car will have wide appeal in the US with a lot of potential buyers, which helps keep prices up.

I have seen a few big block Pontiacs go the the states and they did not bring nearly what an equivalent American Pontiac or Chevy brings.  Unfortunately many of the Pontiac and Chevy communities there (with the notable exceptions of someone like Beaumont Bill) see our cars as "bastards", not really a Chevy and not really a Pontiac and thus would never pay any big money for them.  The bottom line is that anyone who does this car must go into it with their eyes open that they will never come close to recovering their costs if they do a full blown restoration and then choose to sell it.  It should be done as a labour of love and the person should derive the majority of their satisfaction out of knowing that they have preserved a unique vehicle that is a very special part of our automotive heritage.  Unfortunately, as I get closer to retirement, I am forcing myself to analyse much more carefully what kind of return I am realistically likely to achieve on a potential investment of tens of thousands of dollars and the math on something like this is getting harder and harder to justify.  We really need some Otis Chandler and Milt Robson types here to have these types of projects get realized!

Well said.
I know that by 69 SD396 will not sell as well as the same SS396 because of the desireability. There are a lot more people that recall a ground pounding 69 SS396 in their town and want to have one now.

Steve Plunkett expressed an interest in it when it was first for sale. A friend of mine does all his detail work. I was fortunate enough to get a tour of his place a couple of months ago. One of his most prized vehicles is his 69 Safari- the car he learned to drive in. He was able to track it down years ago, buy it and did a no expense spared restoration on it. It's a beautiful wagon! He's the kind of person who should buy this car. He restores cars only because he likes them, not for what they are worth when completed. His pockets are certainly deep enough to do this car up right.

I am thinking I will seriously have to go to his show this year, it looks like a great line-up:

http://www.fleetwoodcountrycruizein.com/2008/2008.html

I guess I will just go to Barrie on Thursday and Friday instead of the whole weekend and head down for this on Sat. and Sunday.  Haven't found much at Barrie the last couple of years so probably no big loss in any event.

It might even be a good opportunity to have a Canadian Poncho get-together if we haven't had one by then yet.  Having owned a 69 Safari, I would like to see his.  Do you remember any details about it?  You're right, he's the type of person who could give the 2 + 2 the kind of resto it deserves, plus it would be a nice companion to his wagon.

Please keep in mind the following is my own opinion. I am not being critical of others who think differently---

It doesn't (shouldn't) matter what a car is worth restored. Do it up the way you want. If you want a concours resto, do it. If you want a driver, do it, even if it IS a one of one car that nobody else on earth owns. If you do a car up to please others, you will be disappointed. It will not measure up, others will be critical of it, and you'll get a sour taste in your mouth.

Restore a car because you want to. Don't do it to make a profit. Don't do it to show off. Do it because it's the car you like, the car you want, and it's the car that when you open the door to the garage and just look in at it, you can't help but smile.

That's what this hobby is all about.

Oh, and I should add that I personally am glad that Canadian Pontiacs have less value. We are able to buy them at a realistic price as long as that continues. WE know they are worth a lot more, so I don't care if the average North American says they aren't!

I've been to Steve's place twice and wondered what the sagnifigance of the Safari was? But I never had the chance to ask him. Now I know.

I was also thinking of some sort of informal get-together for us Canadian Poncho owners. I work at a GM dealer so maybe I could talk the owners into sponsoring a meet there. Or, we could simply meet somewhere for breakfast and go on a run. Sometimes that's more enjoyable than just parking the cars for the day..

"My plan for that car would be,go through the engine, trans+diff probably need nothing.Do all the brakes, scrub the interior.New tires, change gears to 3:31.Buff the outside, leaving ALL the '70z Patina. Then drive it to all the shows."

Hey Mark,
Can you imagine the looks you'd get at a show if you did this AND left the snow tires on! Priceless!jawdrop.gif

Ahh,

But what about if you look at what the Americans are doing... They always want what they don't have.  No offence to the Southerners on this site...  I have been offered quite abit more for my Beaumont than a comperable Chevelle would sell for State Side.

It's all in the buyer and there perspecitve I suppose.

But we don't ever do it for resale, or at least I don't, I do it b/c I love tinkering, and building, and smacking a thumb, cutting my fingers, and drinking a beer with my dad or the guys.  Just my thoughts.

Glad to see the chassis and engine pic's of this car. I emailed the owner about the car a while ago but he wasn't interested in my Allante' on trade. Now I know why it didn't sell for his orig. asking price of $20g. Still would love to own it.

Such a rare car!! I have always liked the Canadian Pontiacs more than the equivilant chevys simply because of the lower production numbers and lower survival rate. I hope whoever bought the car doesn't use the parts to build a 69 Chev. I had a 1970 2+2 350-300hp in 1984. We drove that one till the frame rotted and finally broke. Pulled the engine rebuilt it and used it for 1/4 mile dirt track racing.

I would be interested in a Canadian Pontiac tour someday. By the sounds of it a lot of the people on this site go to  the Barrie Flea Market and we could probably meet there in the spring or fall. More than likely we have met each other at our vending locations. I have been going to Barrie since it was originally located at the Molson Park . I really haven't had any luck buying 55 Pontiac nos parts for a few years at Barrrie and have acquired more on ebay and through Old Autos.

Thanks for setting up the site!!smile         Al
