"A little bit of history"

I think most of us got into these cars based on fond memories of years ago. My Pontiac memories go as far back as I remember. In fact there must have been a little bit of Pontiac placed in my genes. Dads first Pontiac was this stunning turquoise and white 58 Laurentian seen here parked behind my grandparents at Ipperwash beach back when you could park on the sand:
Grandparents.jpg

The Pontiac was traded for a 62 Impala bubble top that served my parents well until early '69. That was when Sinclair Pontiac Buick in London advertised a 69 Strato Chief demonstrator in the London Free Press. Dad went for a look and ended up signing on the dotted line for the 350 V8/Automatic, power steering, power brake, and AM radio equipped Limelight Sport Coupe with medium green interior. He also had clear plastic seat covers installed- a wise move when you have a 3 year old daughter and a 1 year old son! I still remember how hot those seat covers were in the summer! Dad said that the 69 was the best car he ever owned. It took us on many vacations along two lane highways to places like Ottawa, Michigan and up to cottage country. The ol' Strato Chief never let us down. Remember staying in MOTELS instead of hotels? Here's me with my sister in a rare well-behaved moment. I get a kick out of how dad always managed to get a portion of the car in photos he took!:

Despite the lack of undercoating, the Pontiac held up quite well, likely due to being washed often and parked in a carport. As I mentioned in my introduction post, dad splurged on a set of appliance chrome wheels. I was only too happy to pose in front of the car with the new wheels! This was taken around 1975:

Here is one of the last shots taken of the car. It was 1979 and this is my dad (aged 39-my current age) :

By now the car was starting to show it's age. I remember the rear 1/4's being rotted and the interior was getting pretty rough. The clear seat covers were long gone and the cloth upholstery was shredding. A set of fuzzy seat covers hid the truth. In 1980 Dad and I took a trip back to Sinclair Pontiac and found a mint 1977 Lemans Sport Coupe in the used car row. A deal was struck and the Lemans now held the coveted parking spot under the car port. The Strato Chief was sold the next year and never seen again. Sadly, dad was struck with a brain anurism in 1984 which left him paralysed on his left side. No longer would be be able to drive. I was 16 and just got my beginners license. Mom wasn't much on driving so I learned to drive REAL quick! Dad passed away in 2000 from lung cancer, mom 2 years later from the same. I have to say the best years growing up were the 70's and many of those fond memories revolve around that Strato Chief. It took this many years to find a solid/affordable 69 Pontiac. Although it's not a Strato Chief, it's close enough! The 30 year old paint will have to be redone in the next couple of years. Although I really like the Mayfair Maize, I've pondered the idea of having it resprayed in Limelight. It already has the medium green interior. Swap the Laurentian emblems for Strato Chief, add a set of slotted wheels and I'd have a clone! Tough decision..So, to be quite honest, we have my dad to thank for this board. Without him signing on the dotted line in 1969, this forum wouldn't exist.
Todd

 Great post Todd!

Made me think of all the great car trips our family took in the 70's. Amazing how many childhood memories are based around my dads many cars.  I really have to get over to my parents and grab some old car pictures to scan.

 Cheers and thanks, Mark.

Where is this 427 Strato Chief? London? I haven't seen a 69 Strato since the late 80's

Great post Todd. I too have fond memories growing up in the family Pontiacs. Unfortunately I don't have the pictures to go along with them. My first memories are of US Pontiacs that my dad purchased new. 1959 Bonneville convertible which he purchased new and traded it for a 1960 Bonneville 2 door hardtop with a 389 tri-power. That car stayed until 1964 and was dealt on a new Custom Sport. We had the Custom Sport until 68.
Dad always tells me the 60 was the car he wished he had kept and constantly reminds me to keep an eye out for one. I tell him that they are just not that common any more.

We had a 60 Laurentian 4 door with the same powertrain.  I'm going to talk to my Dad and see if he still has any pics of it.  We had that car until 1970 when it was replaced by a 70 Olds Cutlass S 2 door hardtop which I still have.

Stumbled over this old post and had to bring it back to the top.  Very well written, Todd.  I think it probably strikes a chord with most of us, as I'm sure the majority here are into old Pontiacs (or other GM of Canada products which shall not be called "Pontiac") have some link to our past through these cars.

I remember well the family trips along the 2-lane roads and the daily search for a "Vacancy" sign at one of the many roadside motels.  As a kid I always hoped that the motel would have a pool or some kind of play area on site.  One strong memory is lying in bed at night listening to the howl of the truck tires passing by the motel and disappearing into the night.  I was always intrigued, wondering what kind of wild, unimaginable destination they would finally arrive at.  Most people I knew weren't that well-traveled back then, so any destination seemed exotic to me.

Thanks for the great post!

Todd, wonderful heartfelt story about your dad and his Pontiac's. Your story kind of reminds me of my own with my dad. I grew up with our family 57 Pontiac from 1959 to 1970, when the car was finally put to rest. So many great memories of our fathers and the family cars they owned. In the earlier years my dad as well always tried to get the family car into the photos. Thanks for sharing those great memories. Cheers. George

Thanks for sharing your father's car history timeline. Sorry to hear about your mother and father's passing. Your father sounded like great man. I wish my father had one spark of enthusiasm for cars back then like your father had, he didn't care, cars were just an appliance to him he ran hard and threw away. Only neat cars I can think of were my mom's Aztec bronze '66 Corvair Monza coupe (he wrecked and didn't care less), and the forest green '70 Chevelle sedan he ran low on oil in 1976 and again....didn't care. He blamed GM for a poor product not his pathetic self. Our neighbor had a 1967 safari wagon with a 428 and 1970 (US) catalina coupe with a Pontiac 455 they traded in on a new 1977 CAN AM, that was the coolest car on the block back in the day.
