Exhaust manifold coating or cast paint. Where to buy?


I want to refinish the manifolds for my 327. I have tried locally to find a cast iron paint that is high heat. I know I have seen it, but now that I need some, everybody says no. I found it on the Duplicolor website, but my supplier says they don't carry it.

Does anyone in Canada sell either that manifold treatment stuff (I think it's a paste) or a high heat cast iron appearing spray paint?

Help!!!

u should be able to find a supplier in your area. My localstore carries their product and usually has anything not instock within a couple of days.

not sure where u are but this company has site in Ontario.

Thanks! Seeing the POR15 thing gave me an idea. We have a supplier of that in Winnipeg, and I hadn't even thought of trying that place. I was trying the auto parts guys like NAPA, etc.

And the best part is, our driver from work is going to the POR15 place on Monday!

Let us know how the POR stuff works.  I have yet to find a satisfactory product for coating headers/exhaust manifords that didn't discolour, burn or flake off eventually.

If you look at my avatar you will see the exhaust manifold. I bought this paint/coating at Canadian Tire, I can't remember the brand, probably Duplicolour, it was 1500 degree rated and the colour was called "cast". It was very much darker but has lightened up over time. That was two summers ago. I never liked the colour but it has stayed on, looks better I guess than heated up rust colour iron. Problem is I have never seen it since I bought it. You have to have 1500 degree rated paint otherwise 500 or 900 is just a waste of money.

I have seen other manifolds that color. I guess that explains why. I always wondered why people did them in a light color, but I think you have answered my question.

As you may have seen in a different thread, I am not in such a hurry for coating since I broke one of my manifolds tonight........

I went to Canadian Tire at lunch and I found the stuff I used tucked in a corner about 12 cans. It is branded VHT for Very High Temperature. It is labeled as high tempertaure coating and rated 1500 degrees. It has flames on the label and sold for $14.99. There were two colours, flat aluminum and flat grey. The grey looked like a better choice for manifolds than the aluminum. Now I know it is there I may pick up the grey. My drivers side is cracked and I have two 1971 and 1972 casting manifolds I picked up at a swap meet for $10. I am going to be real careful taking the studs out.

Another option is to put the manifolds back to original. I have been meaning to set up an electrolytic system and try it. These links explain how:

You could have them ceramic coated. I had my headers done and they look great and stay relatively cool.

I had thought of that, but they would still need a coating to last, or they will look all crappy again after a while wouldn't they?

I found a supplier for POR15 locally today, so I should see it tomorrow. I talked to someone who had used it and said it worked great.

An update will follow but I won't be building the engine for a while yet...

If you used the rust removal process and finished with the POR15 they would probably look factory original.

softys or autoparts centre, sell VHT cast iron manifold paint, i use it on my headers and exhaust system. about $12/can.... they sell 'engine' and 'exhaust manifold' paint, make sure you get the high heat stuff...

Are you talking about the one at Eglinton and Pharmacy Ray?  Where abouts exactly do they keep it?  With all the other automotive paint?

Yes Store #30 on Eglinton just east of Pharmacy. Is it with all the other Automotove paint, sort of....Go in the Auto Parts/Service entrance, hang right past the tires, there is a shelf that separates the tires from the cashiers and on it they have special paints for calipers, engines and what not. (They also have the rattle cans of duplicolour and touch up on a shelf near this)  At the very end of that shelf towards the wall with tires on it and near the employees entrance are about 12 cans of the VHT, some grey some aluminum in the Flame Proof 1500 degree Coating.
