1969 SD-396

Reassembly is such a slow process as most of you know. Having to clean everything up, bead blast, replate or repaint. Just when you think you are ready to bolt something on there is another part that needs to be on first so you start the whole process over with that part. Anyways.....
I got the side glass all adjusted and new ( aftermarket ) weatherstip at the top and on the doors. I was able to re-use the door stops and a few other original rubber parts from various parts cars. The window fuzzies went on as well as can be expected from aftermarket parts but they are pretty good compared with the original ones.

RE: 69 SD progress

Inner fenders, No wait.......heater box first.
with 7 parts cars you would think that one heater box would be no problem. Wrong. Out of the 7 I have three two good inner assemblies, one good outer, 3 fans and 2 heater cores that tested OK.
It took me quite a while to find the sealant that the factory used and after searching for hours in different stores and checking online a local yard sale comes to the rescue.
Everything cleaned up really well and back together. A little tricky getting the bolts throught the firewall with a new insulation pad but with some help from the boss (wife) it went well. It's hard to be inside the car holding the heater box and outside putting the nuts on at the same time.

Inner fenders.
Thanks to a buddy of mine, Stan. I was able to find out what to use for the rear lower inside of the inner fender where it rests against the frame. Drilling the inner fender and putting in all the staples is a time consuming process but both inner fenders are done.  After some choice words, a few modifications and some sweat the right inner fender is in the car. The left side will have to wait until the fuse box is installed.

Rear end trim.
After sorting through the many parts I managed to get one decent pair of tail light lenses, one good back up lense but the chrome was all really good for original. The SD emblem was a new one and I got it back together the same as factory and repainted the white while the emblem was off. The Beaumont emblem is NOS but not installed completely but I wanted one picture with it on the trunk lid. Side marker lights, bezels and the antenna assembly and mast are all NOS GM parts as well so they are as good as what GM put on the car originally. Not show chrome but that's OK.

Here are a couple pics of the door and quarter glass.
I put new GM door skins on the car and didn't know how I was going to duplicate the sound deadener that the factory used but I did manage to get something really close. I guess nobody will see in there after the door panels are installed but I know it's there.
Before I forget about the door handles I want to mention something about them. I got repro handles from trim parts and they look fantastic but they do mention that they may have to be modified. I can tell you if you don't modify them they don't work. I had to straighten the pin and well another length of rod onto it. The pin is shorter than the original. I guess with the price of steel they are saving some money.
 Now they work great.

Trunk pictures.
I guess this is what you would call over-restored. The factory was hit and miss with spatter paint. They left a lot of red overspray in certain areas of the trunk that I didn't.

Here's a couple pics of the pedals and park brake pedal. I restored these a month ago. Orignal parts. The neutral start switch still works.

Here's a picture of the car from the back. There is still no grill in the car. I was tired of looking at the roller/paint wheels and tires and I don't have the wheels for done yet for the car so I had to put the Boyd's back on. At least they match and all hold air.

Thanks Guys. It's the encouragement coming from people like you on this site that keeps me motivated. I'll try and get some more pictures on here as things progress.

I was cleaning up the engine wiring harnesses and the dash harness tonight. There are only 4 wires cut in the whole harness so I not much work involved. smile I am going to retape the wires so the harness looks better. I will have to find someone that has the non-sticky tape to wrap it up.
Fortunately my dash harness is really good. I would hate to have to find another tach/gauge harness for the car.

Wiring and dash

I managed to find the non-sticky tape to wrap the wiring harness. I cleaned all of the wires and repaired the radio plug wires, the lighter wire, the light wire to the heater and the wire to the E-brake. The underhood harnesses just needed cleaned up, a bunch of the hold down tabs replaced and re-wrapped.
The wiring is installed on the dash with all the dash components cleaned up and installed in the car. Both inner fenders are installed now. The wiring is installed under the hood now so all I have to install the is regulator, horn relay, key switch and I should be ready to fire it up with the key in the column for a change.

Wow, you are putting that puzzle together very well!!

Would you mind sharing where you found that black wire wrap? I can't seem to find it anywhere this side of the US border.

Thanks Carl. I have taken quite a few of these puzzles apart. I have been pretty good at getting the parts back on where they belong. The most difficult thing to do is find them to put them on.
I was south of the border this week so I picked up two rolls at NPD. I gave up trying to find someone with it here.

Ok, thanks. I know I've seen it in the restoration catalogues but I get blank looks everywhere I try for it here.

And I know what you mean about finding the parts to put them on. Seems like I need 2 of everything so when the time comes, I can find at least one of them!

Hope he doesn't read this and get a swelled head, but the stuff he details is sure beautiful isn't it?

So what did you end up using for the sealant? (from one who also has a heater core rad to replace).

When I looked at the sealant I thought it looked a lot like the material that was used to install windows in their frames. The type I used is called gap stop. I don't know where you could buy it now but the texture and consistency is the same as what was there. Maybe a glass shop. Every place I tried to find osme kept bringing out the same urethane caulking tubes for installing new car windows.
 Good luck

grille and bumpers

I know it has been a while since I got some pics on so here are a few.
I got the front grilles restored and installed. The chrome was really good so it was just a scuff, tape and paint. For anyone wondering how long this takes it is about 6 hours.
For anyone installing their grilles it goes much easier if you install the passenger side first.
No issue with the bumpers. Original parts usually go on with minimal concern or effort.

Wheels and tires

As I have mentioned before I am building my 69 as a "day 2 car". Meaning: what was done to it after you brought your car home from the dealer. My car was not optioned with rally wheels only the standard 6 inch wheel and hubcaps.
I wanted to keep a nostalgia look to the car and I have no problem running belted tires even though it makes some people cringe. Nonetheless, I drove on them for years and don't mind doing it now.
I have a pretty good collection of vintage wheels and NOS belted tires that people are willing to sell very cheap.
The wheels I chose to run are a one piece early ET for the simple reason that everyone else in running American Racing wheels, plus I think the center cap for the Super ET looks awesome.
The tires I wanted to use, that I did get mounted and installed on Tuesday unfortunately were a little too close to the quarter and sadly had to be taken off. L60-14 Formula 1 Super Stock on the rear and F70-14 Kelly Super Chargers on the front.
I did get some pictures before removing the tires. I figured I might as well have a picture after paying to mount the tires. Anyways.....
I ended using a set of 4 Protrac 70 Racing Profile G70-14 tires on the same wheels. No clearance issues and it still retains the look that I want for the car.

    stainless trim

I had the car in for an alignment today so it got to go for a cruise down that road at 55 tailgating my black truck. At least some of the dust got blown off and we didn't encounter any rain. Everything went good. I managed to retain all original front end components except for the ball joints.
Tonight I managed to get the stainless trim on the car. The drip rail, window mouldings and wheel opening mouldings. I have a couple of clips that won't grab the trim and am afraid to dent it after having it all polished. Anyone have any suggestions?
It was tough to get back far enough from the car to get some full shots of the car but I will get some more posted on the weekend. I still have a couple more things to finish under the hood before the appraiser comes on Saturday.
