Bear troubles at the lake

Just got off the phone with one of our friends who have a cabin on the lake where we go. Apparently there is a very large, very agressive bear there and he's making the rounds. It's gonna be a bit before we can go check on our place. They say he's trying to get into cabins, cars, even digging into the grey water pits where people have put some food down the drain from the cabin.

Any tips when we go there other than the obvious? (We don't own a high power rifle and anything less would just make him angry)

I guess nobody makes a spray-on bear repellant?hmmsmile

Hey Carll

You own a scattergun-use slugs or 00 Buck and feed him some lead for breakfast.I've shot lots of bears with slugs-they work great!!

Parker asked if we should take the pellet gun along!!!!

Might as well give him a fist in the snout rather, it would at least hurt him a bit!

Make Noise and Yell, they don't seem to like that. There have been a lot of aggressive bears out west this year, lot of attacks. But most of the wardens say make noise and whatever you do, DON'T RUN! But try to avoid them if possible....

when i was up at alert (north pole) they gave us bear spray (hi test pepper spray) for whenever we went for a walk away from the camp. also used to take an axe handle referred to as a puppy pounder for wolves. i still have the bear spray. i gave it to my wife when she walks in the evening.

Can we legally buy that stuff in the sporting goods stores? I had thought about that, but I always hear of it being confiscated at Canadian Customs when people try to enter Canada with it.

Carl, I suggest the marine air horns you buy at Canadian Tire, they fit in your pocket too and they make one heck of a noise. We would carry those on trips in the bush. Black bear are actually timid and afraid of humans unless of course they have become food aggressive.

I came nose to nose with one once, north of Parry Sound and I was only 19 at the time but I gave out a terrific growl and he took off. He made a path in the bush where there wasn't one before, but he left. We had our beagle with us and he helped by chasing it and barking as best he could.

I never came that close to one before or since but I'd say without exaggeration that I have crossed paths with a black bear at least a dozen times in my life. Most at a short distance and in those cases best to keep quiet and back away. At close range though big noise will work.

Welcome to the club!

P.S. you can buy bear spray in sporting goods stores, i know SIR sold it.  You had to sign some sort of release form to prove you were useing it for bears.  It is good piece of mind.
"i think it was called bear guard.  in a black spray can with gold foil lable and big orange pull tab.

yup, its handy to have a can of 'bear guard' ...never know what you might run into camping... i agree with making noise (we've banged pots/pans together!), keeping an eye open... if that bear is that active someone might get rid of it before the next time you go out...

Being a BC boy and years of hunting.....I've had many run ins with bears.
Noise is the No 1 thing to do. Get a kids cap gun and if your walking in the bush fire it off once in awhile. You want the bear to know your coming.
When buying a bear spray or pepper spray. Make sure it shoots along distance.
If you need to use the spray your in deep S**T.
Bears have a great nose, so don't smell like a BBQ and then take a stroll in the woods.
Stand tall......make yourself as big as possible. Yell like an idot.
Black bears run from humans 98% of the time. A bear with cubs will fight.
If you do get attacked by a black bear......go for his eyes.Make him feel pain.
A Grizzly is a different story.

Well, we ran out there yesterday and came back today. Sole purpose of the trip was to check on the place to make sure Yogi and BooBoo hadn't moved in. On the way there something rather funny occurred to me. We had a bag of jelly donuts along in the car (remmeber Yogi's favourite food???)

Anyway, all was well, no sign of them. When we went down the neighbours driveway to check on their place, this was the sign that greeted us:

Carl, this is the time of year you will see them anyway, travelling and eating to get ready to Hibernate.  Not sure what that sign means though. Did your nieghbour set a trap?

No, they called Conservation, or Resources, or not sure of the name but they came out and set up the trap.

I was really hoping to find it (the trap, I mean!!!) and see if they happened to have got it yet. Not sure exactly where they set it and I wasn't about to "browse" too much!

It's Ministry of Natural Resources. Funny, my son worked at a Provincial Park this summer and they average 2 or 3 sightings per year, but this summer it was Zero.

Cool, hope it works out there. I'm not too keen about him being back in spring.
