today the plant manager from this previous operation called to say he may have something similar starting in feb 09 and was looking to make a list of "good" guys that could work on the project. I told him I wasn't sure if I fit the criteria but would take anything he had to offer.

Best of luck to you on this one Ken.

We should all likely take a look at the real world ie: almost all new manufacturing jobs in Ontario since the 1990s are between $12 and $18 per hour. Who possibly, other than those in the automotive industry, could think that they are entitled to $30 plus an hour for unskilled work. Toyota pays between $29 and $32 per hour which is still ridiculous. Could a person possibly convince themselves they have a skill in one of the automotive giants that could not be learned by someone else in a day. I am of the opinion that too much emphasives is placed on the white-collar employees and not enough on the blue-collar. When $10 to $15 per hour is being overpaid per worker per hour per thousands of employees, we certainly have a problem with the eventual competition price of individual vehicles. I have friends in this industry who consistently make over $100,000 per year. What possibly makes these jobs worth more than your job. Doug.

What does this have to do with previous conversation on this topic ? you must have posted this in the wrong area.

As for dollars earned-at the time of the Atlas Steels closing I earned $20.19 per hour as the Metallurgical lab planner to aquire this postion I had  previously worked a 4 shift operation to get enough senority to bid into the lab as a saw and grinder operator working three shifts then aquired department senority (2000 hours) to bid for a test preparer position (two shifts)-the test preparer postion had training hours and training rate for 1560 hours, I then went on to be the test preparer/met technician (one shift) which required another 1560 trainer hours/rate, this position was a combined job so there was no overtime group to work in if I wanted too-I was a sick/vacation replacement for north plant tech/south plant tech/lab planner and held the position as forge tech along with customer complaint technician for the metallurgists each of these areas required training and changed each time I was stationed there to cover six weeks vacation for each position. When the high senority Lab planner retired I was considered most qualified and entered into another training rate for yet another 1560 hours. When times got tough higher senority employees were able to try to "bump" my position rather than take a layoff I attempted to train several people that bumped but without the other experience they just didn't get it. Did I make too much money ? $20.00 per hour ?  X 2000 hours (normal year no overtime) $40,000 gross ? I was releasing steel based on ASTM standards for the aircraft industry. A friend is a parts man at a GM dealer says he only make $15.00 per hour earned $35,000 last year (numbers don't add up) Todd was saying a service writer can make $50,000 a year, these are steady day jobs in nice clean positive working enviroments with heat and air conditioning. I'm not saying I'm worth $20 per hour-my question is-and I have asked it before -How much money should one earn in this great country ?

Please don't tell me "unskilled" even Wal Mart employees are considered skilled. I recently heard a girl at the local store saying she make $12.00 per hour stocking shelves-I was thinking wow that sounds better than working at the Atlas Steels for $20 per hour !

Yes the unions have lotsa fat-yes they promote laziness-please don't group people together-not all are not accountable-even those who work 6 out of 8 hours work in poor enviroments.

My wife works in the kitchen at the local hospital for $17.53 per hour part time, everyone is always saying what a great job she has (money) but when a job is available nobody we tell about it applies ! My friend who works at the GM parts department didn't apply to a factory "because he couldn't go home for lunch on a job like that " !

Yes, if we live within our means we'll all be fine-
buy our products and there will be jobs.

not pro union-not anti union
