Story of a '68 Strato Chief 427

This is a story I would like to share with Canadian Pontiac enthusiasts since I figure youd be interested in hearing about it. It concerns a discussion I had with an owner back in December 1993.

I was at the International Center in Mississauga (by Toronto Airport) for an automotive flea market, I had just walked past a bunch of 1968 Catalina parts and I overheard a guy ask if anything there would fit his 1968 Strato Chief 427. I immediately doubled back and went over to talk with the guy. We ended up talking for two hours!

The guy was from Brantford Ontario and was restoring a car that he had ordered new, sold many years ago and had recently bought back.. The car was a 1968 Pontiac Strato Chief 2-door sedan that was stripped down except for some go-fast stuff. It was powered by an Astro Jet 427 385-horse, backed by a Muncie M20 4-speed, running back to factory 3.73:1 Positraction (Safe-T-Track?) rear. It had manual steering and manual 11" drum brakes. The other options were 14x6 Rally Wheels, G70-14 redline tires, H.D. suspension, tinted glass all around, AM radio and power rear antenna. He ordered the car with a manual rear antenna but GM built it with a power rear antenna. He said it was dark green with I believe black interior. When I asked if it was Verdoro Green se said no, it was a really dark green, Im figuring it might have been Nightshade Green. It was street driven. Has anyone seen or heard of that car?

In talking more with that guy, he had also ordered new in 68 a 68 Beaumont SD-396 coupe. Details on that one are fuzzy but I do recall that it was dark green. He ordered everything on that car, PW,PS, PDB, buckets, console, vinyl top. He ordered it with A/C but GM built it without A/C. 1968 was in fact the first year that you could order A/C on a Beaumont or Canadian Chevelle (most people dont realize that). I cant recall what he said happened to that car, but he did order another car in 69 to replace it a COPO Chevelle!

He tried to order his COPO 427 Chevelle at the local Brantford Chevrolet dealer but the dealer though he was crazy. Chevrolet did not make a 427 Chevelle he was told. So off he went to a dealer more than an hour away (especially back then before highway 403 ran to highway 401). He went to Central Chev-Olds in London, something we now know as one of the in-the-loop knowledgeable high performance Chevrolet dealers. Something like 20 COPO Chevelles were sold new in Canada, and a significant number of those went through Central Chev-Olds. They also sold COPO Camaros, L88 vettes, and the only 2 1970 COPO Novas sold new that werent converted to Yenko Deuces. When he finally got the car he would take it to the local dealer in Brantford for service. He showed it to them and said "see? I told you Chevy made a 427 Chevelle!"

The details that I can remember about his COPO Chevelle was that it was Fathom Green with black bench seat interior, had manual steering, maybe an AM radio. He had sold the car many years ago and had tried to track it down. He tracked it down to a scrap yard around 1986 but he got there too late, Six months before the scrap yard had changed ownership and all cars had been crushed, including his COPO Chevelle(moment of somber silence...). He did say that the original MQ code 427 did survive and at that point resided in a street rod, I think he said it was in a 32 Ford coupe.

Cameron,
You are in luck. The owner of this Strato Chief is a member on here. His username is 427strato

He also used to own the 70 Laurentian 454 that we are featuring this month.

Todd, thanks for the tip! I decided to sheck out posts by that user and found some threads in which he (Doug) talked about some of his cars. Indeed it is the same guy.

It looks like I had a detail or 2 wrong. The dealer he bought the Strato Chief from was not Central in London, it was B&O in Toronto. Come to think of it I do sort of remember Doug saying that.

The car sounds really interesting and highly unusual. 427 Biscayne are kind of unusual and I love them, but a Strato Chief or Laurentian 2-door post with factory 427 power is ultra rare and unusual. Still back in the day when these cars were brand new and I was graduating from 3 wheel to 2, I loved the big GM fastbacks, especially the Parisiennes & 2+2s, the Impalas. There was a new '68 Delmont 88 fastback 1 block from my house in a sort of black olive colour.

It seems that GM Canada back in those days offered more colours on the Canadian cars (18) to the U.S. and their 15 colors. I guess there was colour sharing of certain exclusive divisional colours between the other divisions. Perhaps it was to use up batches of paint on the lower production Canadian assembly lines, or perhaps it was a consolation to having certain option lists shortend when compared to the U.S.

I believe the Beaumont SD was originally ordered by a doctor in London for his wife, but if I'm incorrect, I'm sure Doug will correct me.

I am extremely lucky to have been to Doug's home and have seen the 68 Strato and the Beaumont SD "in the flesh".  Strange, I thought the Srato was brown, but it may have been all the dust that was on it!smile

I am pretty sure I have some pics of the Strato, but of course they would be old film pics that I would have to scan in, and I would have to find them first since I'm sure they must have been taken about 15 years ago!

I have seen Burnished Saddle on a '68 Beaumont, but I can't ever recall seeing it on an SD.

When I was in highschool in Ancaster in the late 1970's - 1980 there was a 1968 Pontiac 2+2 fastback in perfect condition that belonged to a member of the staff. It was Burnished Saddle with a perfect black vinyl roof cover and perfect black bucket seat interior. It was powered by a 327 with a TH400 trans. Like I said, it was perfect. Nameplates, paint, trim. There wasn't a scratch or spec of rust anywhere. The frame was shiny black and the tank looked new. I did not see that car again until January (furious!) 1986 . The car was rusted out and being driven as a winter beater. I was mortified, then angry!

My Oshawa-built '67 Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe is an original Buick colour, J-code Verde Green. At my high school there was also a young guidance counsellor who drove a 1967 Beaumont Custom sport coupe in Verde Green with a black vinyl roof & interior. It had a six & a Powerglide (ahem, like mine)

Well, Hillar is correct. The colour as he saw it was DUST brown however it actually was SS Jade Gold Metalllic which was a very dark green. The Beaumont SD on the other hand was Vedora Green and is now awaiting a repaint as the paint is dull and faded beyond recovery. The Stratochief body and frame are days away from being blasted and the frame , suspension parts, rad cradle and inner fenders are subsequently awaiting powdercoating. If I had a digital camera I would post pictures, however, I just found a regular old camera and will see what I can do. Doug.
