I've put on about 20lbs since I met Connie. She's an advocate of cooking from scratch using wholesome ingredients. There's very little processed frozen food in our house. She's also a very smart shopper- buying large cuts of meat and cutting it up for several meals. She does a lot of homemade soups, stews and chili's. Todays soup of the day is beef barley. MMMMM!
As for being smart about gifts. I once gave my wife a toliet seat cover !! - even wrapped it up nicely. But before you think I'm quite off my rocker, it was a gag gift, but even so, she didnt see the humor in it that everyone esle did!! It was something that was needed and soI thoughtI'd wrap it and get her wondering what that strange shape was! - still not one of my better ideas!! I agree with "loud"'s wife. What else does she want that sh'es not saying?
Christmas this year is going to be pretty easy. We decided to spend only a $100 on each other to have something under the tree. Our plan is a trip late feb early march to someplace hot to thaw out for a couple of weeks. We made a nice profit playing the Americian dollar buying in at par and selling at 1.29. We made enough to cover our winter vacation. It was the only bright spot as our RSP's have taken a beating down 50% over one year but we are just going to let them sit until the economy recovers, hopefully !

I just finished reading your post and getting up from the ground from rolling around and laughing like hell. That is to funny.
I'm not much of a cook but my wife is and really likes the Paderno brand of pots and pans. They go on sale every couple of months at Home hardware usuall a couple of pieces at a time. Regular price is very expensive but when they are 60-75% off they are a good deal.

now if you are going to buy pots. give the lagotina from Canadian tire a perue. they are stainless with tempered glass lid with a thick base for consistance heat. they have different sets but i know they brought too much in for some ladies night a while ago (in our town) and they are quite the deal. I do have my chef papers so i do know a wee bit about cooking and yes i bought a set for myself. the only thing was the set i bought doesn't have a fry pan but that wasn't an issue because you can't beat the old cast iron ones.

Lagostina are good ... there is a copper layer inside the bottom ... we have a set. Revere Ware is another great make. Paderno is expensive, but great stuff from PEI.
The old cast iron pans (if "broken in" properly, and as long as they are not "Chinese iron") are excellent also. We have several griddles/frying pans that have been handed down through the family ... great! Just don't use cast iron on a glass top stove!

We have Lagostina Already!! Anyway we looked at CTC, deals are pretty good.
I decided to get her something for her. I went to the Hudson Bay store tonight because they are advertising Box Day prices now!
I picked out a 14K Gold necklace 22" long, regular price $249.99. The young man serving me pulls out his calculator and say 60% off sir, it is $99. Pretty hard to pass up at that price. I know it will make her happier than those pots and pans BUT I've been married long enough to know that come Boxing day we're buying them too.

Thank you ! someone else going along with the poor quality import steel
Just buy her a cabin and you don't have to worry about pots and pans. Payments for the next 25 years is the best excuse ever to not have to go Christmas shopping.

Should mention that almost everything in the Bay is 30% to 60% off right through the weekend in case anyone still needs anything. Picked up a few gifts for my mother in law to give out, men's scarfs regular $35 for $19, mens McGregor socks 30% off. I also noticed all decorations and trimmings 30% off, crystal and stemware 40% off and all jewelry 60% off. I don't remember the % off but you can pick up a Hudson Bay blanket Queen size for $375, that has to be close to 50% off, best darn blanket you'll ever own, ours is a family hier loom that the kids are already bidding for.
I saw a thing on the news the other night where the "common" discount at big dept. stores like Macy's in the US is now 65%+. TSX is down another 300 points today, this is really starting to get ugly. There are now several credible predictions that oil is going to hit $30 a barrel by year end. Everyone likes cheap gas, but no one is going to like the defaults that start happening when many countries that are dependent on their oil revenues start defaulting on all of their loans and international obligations.

When I was in Palm Beach I got two Nautic dress shirts for $30, two Ralph Lauren Polo for $50. Nautica are $65 each and Polo are $85 each here. In Macey's we got the girls pearl earring and necklace sets for $60, marked as regular $200.
Houses in Leaside are down to $650,000, over a Million just weeks ago!
