Damn Car...LOL

My "winter" beater that I bought, A nice 1994 Grand Prix, decided on Sat night(after driving all day) not to start.  So, I left it and waited two hours for a cab.($30) I got hold of a buddy who drove me to the car, and Nuthing, turns over, but won't catch. HMMM, OK, I call a tow truck ($100)and have him pick it up(from a parkade) and take it to Canadian Tire(where I used to work) Call there and talk to my buddy that works there(a Mechanic) tell him what it did or didn't do. He says he'll have a look and give me a call.
He just phoned and said they pushed the car in and he tried starting it to see what it was doing....The car starts right up.  He shuts it off, uses the Remote start, and It starts right up. He tells me I'm nuts because theres nothing wrong with it. He says the thing starts and runs great.
Oh yeah, I didn't go to work today, so thats more money out of my pocket for my lovely $200 Grand Prix.
Just thought I'd share this with you...LOL
It got up to -23 today, and the wind chill warning is gone. Supposed to warm up to -11 tomorro, but then drop again thru the rest of the week

Thats what I think as well.  Both the headlights and taillights are on when the car is started, I have no control to turn them off(until the car is shut off) Also have no Dash lights at all. Thinking maybe a wire is crossed somewhere.

I'd say its the remote starter. I had an identical problem with my 1998 Chev 1/2 ton V6. Pulled the cheap remote starter out and haven't had a starting problem since.

As I read through this I was thinking "unhook the remote!"but I see I got beat.

Do you mean it cranked but no fire?

A little snort of ether next time it acts up would determine if it's fuel or spark that is the problem.

I think he knows of the problem, or how much to fix it. You picked that car up pretty cheap if I recall.

To me it sounds like it has one of those immobilizers with the key you have to put in, before the car will start.

Guy at work has a 2001 Regal that was bought used with an aftermarket remote start. Had all kinds of intermittent and mysterious starting/stalling issues. Eventually had it diagnosed by a dealer, complete nightmare hack job on the dash harness. Cost him $800 to sort it out.

most of those remote starters are poorly installed.
could also be an intermittent fuel pump. the tow ride might have jarred it into running again. if it no starts again, check for spark, listen for the pump cycle before cranking it. a good smack on the bottom of the fuel tank will sometimes get them running again.

Thought it was going to be the fuel pump, couldn't hear it when I was trying to start it, that night.
Had an 88 GMC that I had to do that smacking the tank on...It only worked twice though. Then I had to change it.

Yes, if you can't hear it then you have likely figured it out. Make sure you check the wiring before you replace the pump. I had a customer buy a nice expensive one off me for his Tahoe, replace it, still no start. Bad wiring....cry

Just had the same thing on my '88 GTA. Thought it was the pump as it wasn't running, turned out to be a broken wire. Found this out after dropping the tank and putting a new pump on.

Shoot, warned you too late...

We've had it in the shop where they were all ready to condem the pump and decided to check the wiring. Sure enough, broken.

Well just got home from the Tire....Nope, not fixed. Mechanic was gone home and they were ready to close up. I got my keys and went outside, and wow, it turns over like crazy, but no start. Went back in, and the Asst Service Manager came out and listened. Its booked in again for tomorro.

The 3.1L had some issues with the crank sensor causing a no start or stall and no start, very tempeture related, But usually fails when hot. But ya they need to see if it has spark and fuel pressure before replacing a bunch of stuff.

Yes, and also failed ignition modules too.

Did it purr like a kitten until now? The reason I ask is we have seen where they have a miss (bad coil) and that seems to burn out the ignition module if it's run with the miss for very long.

Ran perfectly smooth, never an issue with the way it ran, and never a problem starting.
