an afternoon at an AZ scrapyard

Anyone who knows me well knows how much I like just wandering around the scrapyard.  I'm in Phoenix for the week, and just spent the afternoon at Desert Valley Auto Parts, visiting their north yard.  I spent a couple hours in amongst numerous 60's chevs and pontiacs.  My cars are 70 Canadian Pontiac 2+2's so not much here will fit, but there were 8 or 9 US 1970 Bonneville's and Catalina's.  The cars are in various states, some extremely picked over, some not too bad, a convertible, most are A/C cars, etc.  If I needed a bumper or something there were plenty in good shape, and the cars have little rust.  (lots of dust, but little rust).  Hopefully tomorrow will have me wandering around a few more yards, including Hidden Valley Auto Parts near Maricopa (SW of Phoenix).  The toughest thing is ditching the wife at a mall and guestimating what time I'll pick her up.

There are a lot of smaller wrecking yards north of Phoenix on the highway heading to Flagstaff. I spent two weeks in that area and had a lot of free time to search the yards. There were a  lot of four door cars and pickup trucks in these yards. Sadly most of the yard owners had all the special interest cars sold upon arrival to the yard sight unseen. They all had deals with other dealers in the US eastern area. When there was a truck load full the cars were shipped east. I did find factory tinted glass for a 66 Chev pickup .

I found good rust free cars by driving up and down lane ways in residential areas of Phoenix itself and by just staying outside at shopping malls and seeing what drives in and parks at the mall lot. There is also a really big cruise night at a Mall in Phoenix where there were hundreds of collector cars, hot rods etc.

Enjoy yout trip.

Al

Clint, any 69-70 full size wagons?  I'm looking for the rear window air deflector.  I know the one off a Buick will work as well, not sure about a Ch*vy.  Funny how Olds never offered a full size wagon those years.

You guys need to say these things more often. Seems to me I know of a deflector on a Buick wagon in a yard but won't likely be there till spring.

I hit 3 more yards today.  Steve Barcak's Pontiac Heaven (not an operating business, just his private collection of Pontiac's, some for sale, some for parts, and some he's restoring, etc) & Hidden Valley Auto Parts  www.hiddenvalleyautoparts.com , both near Maricopa, and Desert Valley Auto Parts www.dvap.com south yard at Casa Grande.  It's been raining here, with temp's about +15C, but better than -20C.  Steve is a real good guy, he took the time to show me around.

Hillar - Hidden Valley Auto Parts had a couple 70 Chev wagons, including a green one in the NE corner that had I'm sure had a roof rack so may have the wind deflector (also had the front fiber optic signal light indicators on the front fenders, so may have been a fairly loaded up car).  They also had a 70 Chev beige wagon, and I'm sure a 70 Pontiac wagon.  Steve Barcak www.pontiacheaven.org  had a number of 69/70 Pontiac wagons so he may also be a good bet.  He's restoring a 69 Bonneville wagon for his collection.

I'm not much into taking photo's, my wife left her digital camera at home, and my digital camera is still in the box, never been opened.  From what I can tell, the yards are getting smaller, as the Hoctor family run Desert Valley has moved about a mile from their old location.  The father sold the land a 3 or 4 years ago for big bucks, and the sons had to buy the cars in competition with others (many were crushed however) and set up shop at a new location that's much smaller than the old location.  At least they know what they have and where it is.

I may go back to Desert Valley, visiting their north yard again tomorrow and I'll keep my eye out for a rear window deflector.  (I presume you're talking about the deflector on top of the rear window OUTSIDE the car).

Yes Clint, that is exactly what I am looking for, it deflects the air on the rear window to help keep it clean.  Any tips appreciated, being in Arizona, hopefully they will be pit free.

Saw one of those in the "X" version at Barrie this year.  304 ran real nice, looked relatively clean underneath too.  I still have the contact details somewhere if anyone is interested in a "fast" sleeper.wink
