63 Parisienne factory air?

This was discussed somewhere, was it on this forum?

Was there really factory air available in a 63 Canadian Pontiac?

Carl, maybe your eyes are better than mine. Here is the 1963 Sales brochure, tough to read but I can't see mention of AC on there.

Factory installed air conditioning made it's appearance as an option beginning with the 1959 model year Canadian Pontiacs.

In '63, there were two different air conditioning options offered.  They were:

Deluxe - order # C60   or

Custom - order # C64

Either was available in all models.

I can't find it anywhere. What literature have you seen it listed in Rebel?

The best I could come up with is my 63 factory assembly manual has a memo and a couple of pages of detail on a kit they worked on to install air in a Mr. Cain's 63. I am assuming he was either an engineer or an executive at GM then.

Oh, and I can't find anything on it at all for 62 or older. I'm itching to know where they show this!

I have personally seen that car and spoken with the owner many times at cruises around Ontario. I will say that he is an extremely knowledgable man on all Canadian Pontiacs and in particular his year, 1963. In fact he is the gentleman who told me no 348's or 409's in 1962 Pontiacs that we discussed the other day on another thread. He has a trunk full of Canadian Pontiac literature, sales brochures, FSM and the like and 65Camino and I have enjoyed speaking with him and looking at his stuff on several occassions.

I feel confident in his knowledge. If he says no factory air in 63 it is probably true. As you can see from his car money is no object so if it were available I am positive he would have installed it.

That 327 is warmed over too, double hump heads and high lift cam, he says on the dyno it shows 259 HP at the rear wheels.

I'm not doubting. I just love seeing info on rare old stuff like that.

Besides, after the last weekend episode on here, I'm not questioning anyone here any more!!!

I know where you are coming from Carl, just saying this gentleman is a very good authoritative source of information. Same goes for last week's 409 buzz, this guy seems to know.

PS. I tried to turn him on to www.canadianponcho.ca but he is real old skool.

If only I could figure out how to put the page on here that I have on fiche showing the memo about engineering the kit for 63 air. It's so much fun seeing old documents like that from GM, when we know they weren't meant for us as car enthusiasts.

In answer to your question, a fella by the name of Thomas E. Bonstall is a recognized authority in the field of original manufacturers' publications and has one of the largest collections of Pontiac memorabilia known to exist. He is also the author of a book called Pontiac - A Complete History.

In the Canadian Pontiac section of the book, page 206 - 1959 - [quote - Factory installed air conditioning was listed as an extra cost option for the first time - end quote]

If you will look at the accessory jpg's you posted for 1964, you will see the two air conditioning units offered by GM Canada, which were the same in 1963.

Guess the material I picked up here in Oshawa at the GM head office is wrong then. I'll call them and tell them they are mistaken, no air in '63.

Makes me wonder if all the specs they gave me for the 283, 327 and 409 motors is wrong too.

Why not e-mail the seller of that beautiful 63 Parisienne and ask for an interior shot of the dash. That should provide the answer for the doubting Thomas'.  Has to be a very rare option nonetheless, who has seen one before?

I wish I had the 63 accessory book. That is one of the ones I'm missing.

The way the memo I have reads, it's like there was no a/c in 63 till later in production as the memo is at least half way through the production year. That is where my flawed thinking came from that 63 only had air late in the year. I thought there was an outside chance that this could be 1 of 1 63 a/c cars.

I am NOT looking to get the sand flying again in the sandbox!!!

Geez Carl, don't worry about that, we are all here for good fun and to learn more so if anyone takes offense that's their problem not yours. It has to be one rare car anyway, when I was a kid the only pepole I knew with AC were Cadillac and Buick owners! For the seller of that car to say Factory Air he must know, after all it is immaculate.

I almost hesitate to ask this, but I will anyway. Does he have the GM documentation?

The custom unit is the underdash one, the deluxe is in-dash. Unfortunately, having the GM documentation won't help. GM didn't start keeping track of the options they put in vehicles until 1964. Any paperwork you get from GM Vintage vehicles today will list the options if built from '64 on, but nothing pre '64.

Rats, back to the drawing board!

Did they put the little tags in the seat with the list like they did in 66?

I honestly don't know if they were putting the build sheets under the back seats back then.
