This thread could potentially last several months. I finally spent some time in the garage tonight. I managed to get the exhaust manifolds removed and only cursed about 4 times. They came off in pieces:
Something I did notice is the smog tube for #1 cylinder is white wheras the others are pretty much carboned up:
Anything I should be worried about? I noticed that that exhaust port has a bit more surface rust than the others:
I pulled the plug for that cylinder and it looked fine (just a little rich)
not supposed to use a hammer to remove those manifolds todd. looks like a bit of moisture got into that ex port. hows the spark plugs look as far as white/rich?
It just needs some running.. Someone mentioned, it will have little valves, but it will be great for cruising....I still suggest ,you bolt it in, run it for summer, and than make plans for upgrades next winter..You know, (big cam) (aluminum heads) (roller rockers)(1050 carb) 4.88 gears MT bias ply nylon L60's lol lol
The manifolds were already cracked. I only used the 5lb sledge to make a 1/2" socket fit a rounded 9/16 bolt! The spark plug looked rich. I think I'll take Brad's advice and put a 71 LS5 cam in while it's out of the car and an Edelbrock intake. It was a PITA doing the cam on the 350 with the engine in the car. We'll see. I need to get back on Ebay and start sellin' stuff to make some play money!

Todd,
I had a 454 in a 73 Corvette convertible (3700lb car) 400 turbo, I put a cam dynamics 280H in it thats 280 duration 526 lift, it had a spread bore holley and headers-13:90 @ 102mph with 3:23 gears-no need for a stall converter, a friend had a 69 Chevelle used a 272H with a big Holley went about the same
Todd, what swap are you performing? Changing a '69 from small block to big block?
Please let me know, as I did such a change 3 years ago in my 70, 350 / turbo 350 to 454 / turbo 400. Made a whole new engine harness for the big block, had to get the proper turbo 400 crossmember and frame brackets, etc.
Decisions decisions.. We'll see how the funds go and that will pretty much decide whether I cam it or not. seventy2plus2:Yes, I'm swapping the 350 in my 69. How many changes did you have to make to the harness? So far I only see minor changes (eg: oil pressure sending until wire)
I'm going to run the THM350 for the time being.
CDNPONT: I have a 12 bolt posi lined up, again it's a matter of getting some $$ together. Likely will pick it up in the Spring
Carl- I'd like to run headers.
Lots of little things to consider as well. I'll need mounts, oil pan (427carl has one) , a bigger rad, front exhaust pipes, springs, and I still need to replace the front ball joints. I also would like to improve the handling of the car at some point too.
Congrats big guy and remember if you get stuck your just a phone call away from the experince staff at TINY'S.LOL Ill stop buy on night and give you a hand if you want!
As you correctly noted, cam swaps while the engine is in the car are a major PAIN. If you have any thoughts about swapping the cam, do it NOW! Also, what is the mileage on this motor? A new timing chain might be a good idea in any event. If you don't do anything else, you may want to TERRACLEAN it, probably good insurance if you don't know how long it has been sitting.
