Anybody have any pond grooming tips?

DSC02303.JPG
Have had excellent weather and my pond is ready for hockey this weekend just wondering if any members have and ponds and any tips to share for keeping the ice smooth.

Looks good, you must know what you are doing.

I always give it a good scrap after use with a good wide metal blade shovel, then I like to use a thin coating of warm water for overnight freeze.
How far away from a water source are you?

I have been trying to find a nice 2'-3' steel shovel especially for that job, unfortunately not the best time of year to be buying shovels after Snowmagedan.I am about 250' from water.Does cold water not work as well as warm? I was hoping to flood during the day and let the sun "flow" the water out.

I have a big yellow scrapper I got at Canadian Tire a few years back, I still see them there and I saw them at Zeller's and the Home Depot too. It is plastic but it has a 2" wide metal blade on it. It has to be 30" wide.

As for water either works but your idea about sunlight is the same as using warm water, it tends to smooth out the rough spots. Just a thin layer otherwise you may get air pockets and as you say flow it out.

I usually flood about midnight so I can freeze my extremities off, always a good excuse for a single malt in front of the fire.biggrin

Always have a bore hole to check thickness, 4 to 6" is ideal. What a sad thing to hear about drowning while making a rink, just aweful. cry

Oh man.... That is unbelievable. I take our front wheel assist tractor and blower/blade sometimes to clean our pond. I always drill a hole first to check depth. Plus this year the pond only has a few feet of water in it. I may lose the tractor but I should be ok. By this time of year it's fine now here anyway.

Around our house we make sure any new visitors and especially the kids friends are told no going on the pond unless an adult is with you.I don't even check the pond unless my wife is home, and just to make sure when I am clearing it I take my cell phone out of my pocket and put it in my hat so at least I could phone for help.

I am going looking for that scrapper today that's just what I am looking for.

Sad story about the fella that passed away...very terrible for the kids that were there..

My kids live on the pond on weekends and the best thing we've found to use was a neoprene commercial man-door bottom sweep mounted to a shovel blade...it makes a smooth finish without skipping when you hit a frozen part like a shovel does..
Here's the one I used...usually available at your local commercial overhead door dealer for under $15..

Lesser quality ones can be found at Home Depot/Lumberyard type stores..

The magic way is if the pond is spring fed as sometimes drilling an ice auger hole at the end of the day will let the pond automatically burble water up to flood and freeze smooth after you leave..

A True Expert that Peterborugh Pete !

Was going to mention that one of the best ponds we ever skated on had a little water fall that fed it at one end so it was always running down there, a well place board diverted water onto the rink.

Up at the lake we would use a bore hole with an electic pump feeding a hose to flood.
