Steve

Thank you. The support across Canada for this has been tremendous. And then of course there are a few people who say it's time we move.......

Wow! We've had some roads wash out and I've never seen it happen but the power of water is sure amazing.

It's amazing what water can do to a solid. By the way Carl how's that dirt bank that's getting hit by the waves?

That dirt is slowly eroding away, sadly. I walked the beach all around there to day and it's sure taken a lot of the black dirt. Underneath there is a lot of clay and that stuff can handle a lot of wave action.

I have no worries other than having to replace it later. The shed is on about 24 concrete piers drilled 25 feet into the ground. That dirt could wash away and we would just have a shed on stilts! Worst part will be having to replace it and groom it all over again. It sucks because we spent about 4 grand to build that dirt pad and that was less than a year ago!

That sucks. Hopefully you don't lose to much dirt. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get some rock down first when you rebuild it up again.

I just need to get the grass seeded. There was not an opportunity last fall by the time the dirt work was all done. Hopefully this year will be different. Once grass is seeded the water is basically harmless to the dirt.

Just something to make you think.
Carl, be sure to put the right seed down.  Some bright spark at our town council
decided to remove the natural vegetation on the housing side of the river
and plant kikiyu grass.  All very nice until the floods came!
The bank with the natural vegetation remained intact whilst the kikiyu'd
bank washed away and the river is now three meters wider!

Housing near the river's edge is now under threat!

Ouch, that would suck.

I would make sure I use the same thing we have seeded around the rest of the house. That stuff is pretty much bullet proof so it seems. The waves have not affected it at all.

Basically no change here last night. We know we are riding the crest right now but 25 miles south of us they have sat at the peak for a week now so I am expecting the same for us, maybe a bit longer. There is a major river (Morris river) that feeds the Red just about 4 miles southeast of us right at Morris. That will help (???!!!) keep our levels up longer most likely.

Muskrat soup for supper tonight I guess. So far no raccoon for today though!

I called in to work for a couple of minutes today. Interesting. I was doing fine and after that conversation I was overcome with guilt about wanting to stay to make sure our home stays safe. I had been fine with it until now even though I know there will be plenty of talk about me being the only one missing. However, the rest of them live in areas a lot more secure. Not one of them is relying on the power staying on and the sewer pump to work to keep their basement dry.

I'll get over it. It's not like the company is paying me to sit at home. I punch a clock, so no work, no pay. The problem is, it's busy season. The agricultural side of our business covers an area a lot larger than the flood water is covering and the farmers outside of the flood are preparing to seed. They need me to be there.

Sorry, just some random thoughts! Needed to vent again...

Carl vent anytime. Best to do that and then you can move on. I imagine co-workers and farmers would do the same if they were in your boat...no pun intended...well maybe just a little.
And now i'm wondering...will you be listening to Muskrat Love as you enjoy that soup???

Does that mean the water is dropping Carl?

You'd better get the door off that fridge before some kids get trapped in it.

Oh no, not dropping yet.

If you watch the national news they will say it is but that is in Winnipeg where the water is controlled by the floodway gates.

We have a week or so to go at peak still before we see a decline.

Hopefully no kids will be out in 5 feet of water so it should be safe for a bit!

Yes, it has floated in from somewhere. Remains to be seen where it's from though.

I will check Leon's. They likely sent it to the wrong address!

Amazingly enough, he somehow talked a farmer into driving his tractor through more than a 1/4 mile of water the next day to pull him out of there. If he hadn't, that thing would be totally under by now. I see it in his driveway. He told me he would be driving it two days later but I see that didn't happen. What a surprise............

No animals were harmed today in the maintenance of this island............

Breezy day today. A trip over to see what the neighbours were up to was very similar to being out on Lake of the Woods on a windy day. Pretty decent waves for a 14 foot aluminum with one occupant.

Our dog ran away last fall, and I found his doghouse today!

Some shots of out in the open today. The waves would likely have been bigger but the water in the fields is only about 5 feet deep, 4 feet on the roads. In the first picture, I'm on PR330 just north of our driveway.

Very important to know your area when boating in this stuff. This is a set of field harrows. Something like that submerged would sure put your life in danger if you hit it at speed.

The trash accumulates very nicely in the calm parts of yards during a flood. Likely the worst part of a flood is the cleanup. Pretty labour intensive!

Carl, do you wear any kind of survival suit beyond a PFD when your out on the "Lake"? It looks very cold and menacing. Even if you think you could touch bottom it still doesn't look to be a easy go if you capsized, would it?

Thanks for the up date and pics. That water sure doesn't look to clean have you ever had trouble with you water getting contaminated due to flooding. Or do you always have to truck in water in you area?

I don't wear anything but a PFD. It is always on my mind that if I go in, I'm done. I haven't checked but they tell me the water is only a few degrees above freezing (I've felt it enough to know it sure is cold) so a man overboard would likely only be conscious a short time even if he could stand with his head above water. I've told many people the only reason I wear a PFD is so they can find my body easier if I go in. I seriously doubt it would save my life unless I was able to scramble to higher ground and call for help. Even then, help would have to come fast or hypothermia would likely claim me. Usually when I go out I drive parallel to the railway always thinking I would have more chance of survival if I could make it to the rails and stand up. They are in about 2 feet of water.

Vern

We have piped in water here since about 3 years ago. Before that we hauled to a cistern. The wells south from about Ste Agathe on the west side of the river are useless, pure salt water. In 1997 when we saw the bit flood coming I hauled in water to fill our 6400 gallon cistern to the brim so I would have had enough water to last me 3 or 4 months if needed. I also brought in about 75 litres of drinking water this time in preparation just in case the piped in water had issues.
