And as a side note, just be careful you don't let the media carry you away with this. We've lived these flood before and we are better prepared now than ever before (aside from my boat and generator difficulty!). Very few people will suffer any type of serious damage to homes unless something very unusual happens. The media is blowing it up pretty bad.

That's good to hear Carl, on the National tonight they made it look like Armageddon was coming.  Their reporter in Fargo made it sound like this was going to be the worst flood in history...

Internet has come up at home, albeit VERY slow.

The Assiniboine has issues from time to time as well, yes.

I am somewhat overwhelmed by the response I have received here. At this point I've been offered 2 different boats (AK67SD and 62Beaumont) as well as a major size generator. Not sure if I should mention the generator deal as he may want to remain anonymous. If he says ok, I will tell. At any rate, all this in less than 10 hours!!!

Thanks are not sufficient but it's all I have resources for at this point. I have no time to return the favours!

The still to do list includes some plumbing for the sewer pump to route it differently when the ejector currently in use becomes submerged, fill all the gas can, buy extra jugs of drinking water, board up the doors on a couple of old sheds that will go under (and may even float as in previous flood, depending on the level), put some markers on obstacles that will be under water so I don't hit them with the prop (!!!), move an Impala SS to town, shop for a set of chest waders, get all the solar stuff together and work on hooking it up, haul some stuff I have moved for the last time (donate it to the local thrift store) and likely a bunch more. Oh yeah, and work 7:30 till 5:00 like usual!!!

I guess my 327 may fall behind schedule, you think???

My parents friend on river road (st.andrews) has water only a few feet away from her basement tonight... they havent opened the floodway (too much ice). so all the surface water flowing to the red will hit some people, even if in the floodway... i'm waiting on the call to maybe go toss some sandbags tonight!! i hope it eases up and this bit of cold 'slows the flow' for some...

ak

p.s. carl, i can also get a 12' but its only rated for 6hp...

Oh yeah, and drive 25 miles to pick up a boat.

Oh man that is not good AK. I wish I could go help. In 97 we were recipients of a whole pile of work when a private Christian school (about 15 kids) from Carman came and helped us build a 2' dyke around our house. It would be nice to be able to do that for someone else. I know how it feels to receive that kind of help. I heard they had just started to divert water a bit at the floodway today but that will take a bit to work it's way through the city to drop the levels on the north side.

Best wishes for her. I've heard of the troubles they have out there before.

P S  I ran my 20 horse on a 12 foot in the last 3 floods. It's a bit much!

Thank you very much. There is one thing I have neglected to say in all this.

God is in control. He knows very well the purpose of this and the outcome of this and I honestly believe that He has something in this for me personally.

I know that in 1997 I had a LOT of time (5 weeks total boating time) to reflect by myself here on my boring little 100' by 200' island. Out of that came a new person who already knew God but had a whole new appreciation for Him.

Thank you all for your prayers. I have been so wound up with all of this that my prayer time has suffered.

Wow, just another great Canadian Poncho offer Rolilk! I think I have it pretty much in order. Just have to get my Impala SS to Morris but this cold weather has bought me a bit of extra time as the river is rising a lot slower. I will keep that in mind but I think I'm good right now. Tomorrow I plan to pick up a generator, Saturday a boat and Sunday hopefully out to the cabin to pick up gas tank and hose, life jackets, paddles, maybe my little generator that's there and a few other misc things. Hopefully after the weekend we're all ready and then, bring on the water and let's get this over with!

Good to hear that you sort of have things under control. With nature that's about all you can do. Make's us feel pretty self-centred when we are complaining here that they haven't swept the sand off the streets yet. It sure puts alot of things into perspective. I'm also praying for you and the many others who are stressed at this time. It's so neat how you see people pull together at times like this, reminds me a little like when the fire was here in 03. Hope you can get some decent rest.

Thanks Jerel.

I wanted to go out there to help when the fire was. So far, my job prevents that. A few more years......!

I have never forgotten the help we got in our major flood of 97 and I want to return the favour to someone sometime in the near future. The feeling you get when strangers help with no expectation of payback ever can not be explained, that is for sure.

I just noticed this map on the Manitoba government website where I get the updated flood info.

Thought you all might like to put his into perspective. In the middle of the map you see Morris. A red line goes straight north from Morris and says "330" on it and you see the name "Riverside". We live almost exactly underneath the last "e" in "Riverside".

Here I am complaining to the wife about shoveling snow yesterday and then I see what you are going threw. The amount of work and planning you have to do is just
mind bogling. I bet you have not had a good nights sleep for awhile. My heart goes out to you  and your family.

Ian, the best thing about a flood is that it's a great time to figure out what's really important in life. I remember how much I changed in 97 when we were threatened so severely and it lasted a long time. I came out of that with a new view of many areas of my life. Some little things don't irk me the way they used do!

The moral support from this group has been great! So has the local support of guys with items to lend to aid us.

I see Fargo broke their all time record last night. That's one record nobody wants to see shattered...

I thought about Carl when I was watching the news last night on Fargo trying to save the city. I guess the high water dosen't hit you for a week? I hope all your efforts come to a happy conclusion.
Take care Carl

We will likely be boating in a week or so, depending on weather. Once we start boating it will likely be a tense week or so until we see where it peaks.

Fargo is sure in trouble this time...

So this would be about the location of your place Carl?

3390551374_cce7987ef7_o.jpg

Carl, aside from all the destruction and misery, does the flood actually do any good for the soil in the surrounding area. I mean, it must have been going on long before anyone was there, so I'm supposing it's a good area for farming.
 Does it enrich the soil?

Mark.

Right under that yellow tack is likely where I will be docking my boat for the first while. The last flood we had, that was our dock for 2 weeks. North of there the road was exposed. We are exactly one mile south, right at the south edge of the big grove of spruce trees. That was a tree nursery from 1926 until 1996, that's why so many trees.

You can see our driveway leading in from the road at the bottom left of that green clump of trees. Also you can see the creek that runs through our property. It feeds into the Red River about 3 miles southeast of us.

Since we are living at the bottom of a former lake (Red River valley) the soil is some of the richest farm land in the world. The floods deposit even more of the rich silt in the fields. Our text book in school even made mention of the farm land around Morris being the richest dirt in the world. Amazingly enough, when the flood is over the guys will likely be seeding the land that was submerged almost the same days as the land that was not. It has been proven over and over to work that way. Interesting...

Take care Carl. Had a good look at Fargo, they are not anywhere prepared as is Grand Forks is. And you need to remember Mantoba spent millions after 97 where Fargo right about now wish they did. I think Mantoban's are way better prepared for this than any Province or Country for that matter. Good luck we are all with you even in the lang haul. I still remmember how long it took in 97 for the water to go back to normal. It seemed like the whole summer passed that year before I could take down the sandbags. I have some real interesting pics from 97. I will have to go and dig a few up. My Dad at the time was part of EMO and had to stay in Morris. I stayed in Aubgny and tried to keep the generators and pumps running. That year I really grew up and became an adult. You really do learn whats really important. Oh yah by the way My daughters birthday is Jan 29/98 you do the math, Flood baby?

Wow, I sure do. That is highway 23 coming into Morris on the east side. That was the only route left out of town. I forgot they had to pile the gravel up to keep a dry route.

I drove that road when I went the 45 miles east to Steinbach to see my wife, 30 month old son and 4 month old daughter. I left home in the boat at 6:30 in the morning with my bike in the boat. Docked at Morris on the dyke, rode my bike over a mile to a truck parked in Morris, put the bike in the truck, drove back to the boat, loaded the boat and outboard on the truck, drove to Steinbach to see my family, drove all the way around the flood on the north side (so I could come back in to our home from the other side), put the boat back in the water, put on the outboard, threw in the bike and boated back in just before dark. About a 14 hour journey and I think it was over 250 miles to spend all of about 2 hours with my family 45 miles away!
