Not really Mark. As long as the power stays on (and even if it doesn't, we have backup) we should be fine. It would take an exceptional amount of rain to threaten our home as far as water in the house.
Probably my biggest worry now is missing a bunch of work. That is a real possibility. Someone has to be here almost all the time once the water is high enough (likely by Sunday) to seep through the hill and into the weeping tile. At that point the sewer pump is our most important resource and someone has to be here to make sure it runs each cycle and has no leaks or complications. Pretty boring hanging around waiting for it each time. I will be a pretty expensive "guard" for the pump if I have to stay home from work. Not really any option because the expense involved if it were left alone and malfunctioned would soon surpass the lost wages!
Like one of my customers said on the CTV national news tonight, "I could move, nobody is making me stay here". He reflected my feelings exactly. Nobody twists our arm to stay. We do so knowing this flooding is a possibility. No matter where a person lives, there is some kind of difficulties to be faced that potentially could be heartbreaking, expensive, time consuming etc.
I have traveled a lot of North America and still think the Red River valley has more to offer than any where else I've been. I love it here. We have some of the most productive soil and most prosperous farmers in the world. I work in an incredibly prosperous little town. We just have to put up with this every so often. From 1979 to 1997, this never happened once, so it's not like it happens every year.
Nervous? Only that they might try to come around and make me leave.

carl if you get out with the camera can you get some high water shots of the cars that didn't get moved to high ground. i think you said a nova and the impala.
Wow, those new pictures of the water coming from the west are great! (or not so great if you live there) It probabaly means little to everyone else here but the Red River is to the east of Carl's house but the flood always hits them from the west due to another river backing up that feeds into the Red River. It just amazes me how the west side of the road and the railway tracks is completely flooded already.
Carl, You just amaze me !! Your such a upbeat and positive person. You can tell from how your reacting to all this that you just love were you live. My thought and prayers are with you and do not hesitate to ask for help. I think one word from you and we will be having a Poncho meeting at your place LoL.
"Nervous? Only that they might try to come around and make me leave."
Just turn the lights off and don't answer the door :)
That's what I did in 1997 for the BIG flood! However, the guy finally spotted me. Our neighbour was here with me too. The pilot (helicopter) knew we were here because we had no place to hide our boats! He finally spotted us when he went around looking in all the windows. We had the doors locked. After he sensed there was 2 of us, one of him and that we weren't going, he flew off. A few days later the army came to visit but he already knew we were going to resist it seemed. They mostly came to check up on us it appeared. After that, all the army visits were just to make sure it was all ok, and to deliver the Winnipeg Free Press to us!
Thanks guys for all the support. This is a lot easier than in 97 when my only communication to the outside was my old Motorola (brick) cell phone that cost me a fortune to use!
Gonna run out now and see if we can get some pictures of today. It's not coming as fast as it has other years, so have a faint hope that maybe it will not be quite as bad as forecast. I don't want to get too excited yet because I've been fooled in the past.

This is sort of an off the wall question but do you guys have any problems with water shortages later in the summer or are the rivers and creeks around you able to keep running throughout the year barring freezeup. I was thinking if a person ever wanted some water storage like a dugout or even a manmade lake it would have been an opportune time to dig one because you would have an instant fill plus if you could have it located where one of the creeks flow for part of the year it wouldn't even get that stagnant. Just seeing your pictures makes a person think of all these different things relating to water. Hang in there.
Here's a couple of pics near my place... this ice jam let up in the south end of the city and is kind of caught on this bend... further up its still a single sheet of ice across the river (by my place)...these were taken with the cell phone, walking the dog earlier

There has been the odd time in the summer that we have struggled with the local water supply (which is from the Red, ironically) because it feeds a lot of people the length of the valley which is about 250-300 miles. The wells around here are useless because they are full of salt. Because of that, people within about 30 miles of the west side of the Red rely on it for water. There is talk of building new reservoirs and Morris has actually started on one.
Andrew, I have been watching on the news to see how you guys are making out in the city. This has to be the most stressful springtime for Winnipeg since the floodway was built 40 years ago.

Today was a real nice day so the girlfriend and I went down the road from where I live and she took some pics of the Red river and the floodway.

Man, I think I know where all our ice went! It sure seems like the worst troubles are Winnipeg and north this year. We feel for you guys. Been there, done that, for sure...
We are now officially cut off from the outside world as far as driving goes. Our driveway still has a couple of feet to go but I made the last trip out by truck this afternoon. It is no longer safe to drive through the washouts on the provincial road. However, it is not rising like I thought it would which is great news. We are supposed to crest on Monday. Still not really enough water to boat so we are sort of locked in here for now. If I'm bored I can rip up and down about 800' of gravel driveway!!!
