Came back from Aubigny today. All is fine for the most part those =who refuse not to build on the south side are in trouble Like the one in your shot. But thise one the north side are fine. The Red is only up the back feild and nowhere near the dike. St Agath id fine they have reenforced their dikes. But the 200 in St Adolph is under water and runing over fast, It will be washed out by the morning. They were taking flow readings right on the road.
We went to church this morning but the whole time my mind was on home. The service was excellent though. It was a tremendous reminder that through all this I am not in control. God knew long before I was born this depressing day would be here today! It's gloomy, overcast, windy and raining. They have raised the forecast water peak again and now tell us it will not peak until Wed. That in itself is not bad but it looks like the peak/crest will hang around for at least a couple of weeks. That can wear a guy down.
We had a huge increase overnight. Our neighbours a mile north tried to contact us early to move our vehicles but we have things set up that we can't hear the phone at night. They did their best and dragged my 6 speed car to a bit higher ground. The clutch was obviously in the water because it sure chattered when I moved it after we got there!
We are now at a level that is the 3rd worst flood in history from what I can tell.
We are killing mice steadily. They have all sought refuge on our island!
The cars I showed yesterday are in a lot worse shape today...
The 96 Impala SS hulk-
The 62 Nova hardtop-
Little bit of my cousin's ingenuity to save his vintage sled (they rent the 24 acre parcel we own adjacent to our property)
I suspect we are likely staying put here for a day or two. At this point, we can not boat to where we parked our vehicles until the water rises more and covers the next mile road and fills that section with water. That section of land does not have enough water to boat, nor does the road have enough water on it to boat over. We're kind of hooped for a bit. I figured this day would come.
I am hearing that people on the north side of Winnipeg have lost their homes due to ice jams. That is so sad.

That's heartbreaking. Thank God your neighbour dragged your car to higher ground or you might of had wet carpets. I'm also teaching my kids on the pictures your sending. All my girl can say is OH MY GOSH.

That is so sad and stressfull I bet, the Lasalle river is very high too, all the farmers fields are saturated with water and the rains sure ain't helping us ! Carl, normally how far is the Red river from your place ? Hopefully God spares us.

"Normally" when the Red is not on our lawn ( ) it would be between 2 and 3 miles from us. For some reason it seems to feel the need to visit us occasionally!

Glad to note that there is a few meters to go before it reaches your house. Better to be safe than sorry! I think Canso65 will have to wait a while for the nylon insert he is looking for his horn!

Well, we just took a pretty good blow with the new flood forecast. Originally we were supposed to crest here today, then moved to Tues, then Wed and now Friday. I can live with that but now they are talking another 15" of water as well which would give us a tie with the 2nd worst flood in history. I wish they wouldn't have done this on a day that is already overcast, windy and rainy....... It kicks a little bit right where it hurts!!!

Man that sucks sorry to see the devistation I hope all goes well for you, your friends, and family. at least you can get some cheap project cars when the water goes!
Hey Carl, sounds like you're getting a visit from Prime Minister Harper today. I guess you'll see if that makes any difference or not. Have they been fair with any assistance with previous floods or are you on your own? Keep those life jackets close.
Yes, I hear that. I hope he's a bit more considerate than the individual (who shall remain nameless but he was Prime Minister in 1997 for our biggest flood ever) who came and held a sandbag for a photo opportunity. It was so obvious he didn't care two hoots about the situation that it was sad. I will never forget the total lack of compassion from him.
On a much more positive note, the provincial and federal governments take care of us pretty well. They do a much better job of it than our neighbours 25 miles south in the US. I feel bad for the people along the Red River in the US. FEMA (in the US) has a lot to learn from Canada when it comes to natural disasters.
We are helped out with things such as allowances (food, lodging, etc) for those evacuated as well as assistance with clean up etc. They don't pay a lot but they do give us something (I forget the exact amount) as an hourly wage to clean up. It's around minimum wage I think, but I still think that is a very nice gesture that they even do that.
And one thing I should add. The Canadian Red Cross is amazing. I have never forgotten 1997. They came in, set up and we put in applications for assistance. They gave each household a lump sum, I think it was $1500. It helped make our payments while we were off work as well as pay some other bills. I get teary eyed every time I tell this story. I will NEVER have trouble donating to the Red Cross when I see what a blessing they are when people are so down and out and in many cases have suffered great losses.

I moved my wife and 2 kids out yesterday. It really plays on your minds when you are cut off from the world and we could see it in the kids, as well as very much on my wife. I will be having a few good cries today I'm afraid, kind of like right now....
This stuff really works on your emotions, let me tell you. Being alone makes it worse. I had a bad night. Your mind runs away and all I keep thinking is it will just keep rising and rising until they have to come and rescue me off the roof. I seriously doubt there is any chance of that happening but when you are alone that is how this crazy human mind works.

Hang in there Carl, our thoughts are with you. Why did you decide to move the family out now? I thought you were so much better prepared than in previous years?

Your not alone in this Carl. You have all of us here. I know that is not a replacement for your family, but you can bounce anything off us and you'll get a reply.
God be with you Carl. Emergency Measures Minister Steve Ashton says over $12,000,000 paid out in aid already. Prime Minister is expected to make an announcement after visiting Morris. It is incredible to see your photos and those of the ice flows just hard to believe. We all have strong bonds to our homes and property but don't do anything foolish, we all like you too much !
We are all with you Carl....Stay Strong! You have your faith and the prayers of almost every member on this web site! Take care of yourself and stay in touch.
The same from me Carl. I've been following this all along and hoping for you it would be over by now. You are a true Canadian in the way you have been handling this and I can't think of any higher praise.

I would say yes, we are better prepared than ever before. It's hard to explain the emotions that go with it. My wife did ok until we were completely surrounded. The kids behaviour visibly changed also. Until we were surrounded they were excited about living here. Once it actually happened they didn't complain but as soon as there was talk of the option of moving out they were all quite happy to pack their bags. I don't feel they abandoned me at all. I know exactly how it feels and I don't blame them a bit. It's much better if they have at least a bit of normal in their life (work for my wife, school for them).
As far as someone mentioned it being over soon, my guess is I will be boating about 3 more weeks so we are just picking up speed!
Thank you all very much for your support. I have been a bit hesitant to come on here and share because it makes me feel like a whiner.

Carl, I don't believe anyone here would view your posting as whining. We all need a safe outlet sometimes and for many of us, this site can be the "safe" part. Even though we haven't met in person there is a sense of comeraderie (sp). As I said before your situation is in our prayers.

Carl you're definately not whining. And for you in your fortress of solitude for the time being we're happy to be a connection to the outside world for you. Hang in there bud!
We just got kicked where it hurts yet another time. They are now saying our crest will be only Saturday (instead of Friday) and this will officially be our second worst flood ever. Just what we needed to hear.....
As of now it's pretty much guaranteed you guys will be blessed with my presence on here for the next month, maybe a bit longer. The boat that 62beaumont loaned me will be put to good use, that's for sure.
Man, this is turning into a nightmare. It's a good thing I spent so much time preparing for a lot worse than they originally forecast. I wouldn't have except I have always been one to plan for a lot and hope for only a little.

I believe this is the Prime Minister and Premier as they headed to Morris today. We (neighbour and I) had left to go pick up a pump and generator for him just before they flew over here. I guess I'll see him on the news here shortly to see if we impressed him with our new water park...
Well, duh, maybe I should post the picture I meant to an hour ago...... Looks like they flew almost right over top of me and I wasn't home! I could have stood up on the roof and waved my arms with the international distress signal or something!
