A sign of the times

I put an old, rusty, worn-out leaf spring out by the curb next to the trash can last night, hoping the garbage men would put it in their truck (it was fairly heavy and they sometimes are picky about what they will take). This morning, I glanced out, trashmen hadn't come yet, but the spring was gone. Must have been picked up by someone who came around at night or early in the morning. Couldn't be sold for anything except scrap.

Hard times when people scrounge for scrap metal.

probably picked up by a guy cruising for scrap metel. I put mine out by the trash all the time ,not for the garbage pick but for the old scrap guy. See them all the time here going up and down back lanes looking for metal scrap. The rule is if its past your fence line you want it gone.

That's very common in my nieghbourhood for trash trollers to come out at night. I've seen them and talked to them a few times, even helped the guy load an old BBQ. Some guys do this for their living. Cash money is King, no tax man at the dump!!

We have a bunch of guys on trash day going thru the recycle bins looking for pop and beer bottles. $.05 for a pop can and $.10 for beer. I think they got $15.00 of cans and bottles hanging off their bike at the end of the day.

Good that scroungers are taking initiative and dooing something useful, but I couldn't live on $15/hour when I was working, I cannot imagine living on $15/day.

I do remember one day when I threw out an old washer and dryer (both had quit working, with what I considered fatal flaws, not worth repairing), and as I was lugging them to the curb (our trash service will pick them up with a special truck if you call), a guy pulled up in an old pickup and asked if I was throwing them out, so I helped him load them on his truck. Hopefully ho got more than $15 for them somewhere.

My scrap guy just told me this morning that the place where he sells it has just informed him that they will be taking nothing for at least 2 months. They don't even want it for free.

We may be paying to have scrap steel hauled away!!!!!

Sometimes that "past the fenceline" rule gets stretched a little.... When scrap prices were high I had a couple hundred pounds of my scrap steel stock pile "picked up" from beside my garage. I guess they needed it more than I did.

It is nice when they pick up the stuff you don't want.

Whoa, I guess I must have been living a little isolated from the rold around me, I didn't realize there had been an under-the-radar (no taxes, that is a very good thing) individual business in scrap metal ... I did know about bringing your aluminum beer cans to a place in town that would crush and weigh them and give you a small amount of cash, but then my doctor told me I had to give up drinking beer. And this was after being born and raised in Wisconsin, where beer-drinking legal age was 18, and beer was a natural part of life (not too different than many parts of Canada, eh?).

Don't feel too badly for me about having to give up beer, though, I made the switch to gin & tonic just fine smile.gif

That is why my next project is going to be a Pontiac. I have many (in working order) Made in Canada Spares. Tomorrow Rencia and I are participating in a car show and I am sure that a Pontiac for restoration will come to the fore! Looking for a 1954 Pontiac like Rencia's Grandad had!

Time are hard here as well and steel is not put out as waste. We collect and give it to needy people to sell. Only problem is that they get about R3 (35c CAD) as the steel market has bottomed and my brother-in-law is working 4 days a week with no overtime and they are battling!. Thank goodness, I have retired with a reasonable income!

Yep, freshly rebuilt starter, original case and nose, new brushes, new bushings, new drive, new solenoid, $100US - the parts he used were sitting on his shelves a LONG time, they probably actually were manufactured here not overseas.

When I was shopping for a new radiator on eBay, there was one for $172US, about half of whay you could buy any other comparable aluminum radiator for, but it was from the manufacturer in Shanghai China and shipping was about $100 - I always thought that shipping would too high for imported stuff (let's face it, shipping adds no value) plus the time delay factor.
