Electric cooling fan find.


A friend was over a few days ago and we ended up talking about cooling. He runs a small garage in a town close by, and is a bonified car guy. I told him I now have an all aluminum rad, and that I'd like to eventually run some electric fans. He took a look at the rad and said right now they have a 99' Neon that is too far gone and will be scrapped by the owner. He thought that the cooling fans and shroud just might be pretty close in size, and he's pull it and bring it over.

He came by today and dropped it off.

Low and behold, it fits pretty close. The sides where the fans go past the rad could probably use some kind of addition to the shroud to seal it in, but it looks pretty good. The mounts protruding out the sides would make it easy to make brackets or standoffs to mount it. I put a battery to it and they work. 
This just might eventually work!

I've heard that some have been using a Windstar dual fan setup, but have never heard about the Neon. So if anyone might be thinking of doing this, it opens up the options a little more.

 They sure fit nice, BUT, come on guys, they are Dodge!!!!!!!no  Don't go jumping the fence on us here! (just kidding) I use an early Lumina one on my '53 as a pusher. It had the 2 rubber clad feet in the bottom of the fan and it fit nice in the pan of the car.
 I wired it up as GM would with the proper temp sensor in the intake and relay with wiring off of a late '80's Pontiac 6000. So it cuts in and out as required when originally installed at the factory. Works well!! I will add a pic later.............

The Toyota Seinna rads get replaced with fans and all. I thought about taking those fans as they look pretty stout.

Have you seen the price of dual fans with a shroud when new!! disbelief

My next thing I'd like to figure out is the installation of a variable speed fan controller, rather than a strictly "on off" style setup. This older Spal contoller (version 1 I think?) is still available, and I've seen it as low as $70 USD. The newest, Version 3 is quite a bit more. Version 1 will vary 1 fan, and trip the other on only if the controlled fan cannot bring the temp below a certain setpoint at max run speed. Good for 30 amps on the regulated fan. Looks interesting. Very Compact as well.

This is a new SPAL programmable fan controller. Excellent choice for dual fans!!!!! The SPAL electric fan controller (FAN-PWM) will vary the speed of the fan(s) based on engine temperature by using Pulse Width Modulation technology.
The concept behind the FAN-PWM was simple; make a modern electric fan replicate an engine driven-clutch style fan.
The old clutch style fans were spinning all the time, but they weren't fully engaged until a specified temperature was reached.
This removed the strain on the engine, while allowing adequate cooling when required.
By allowing the fan speed to change based on engine temperature, you allow the cooling system to determine how much air flow is required to keep the engine within normal operating temperatures. In most applications this means the cooling system can be kept at a stable operating temperature with the fan running at only 80% of full capacity. If the engine temperature increases, most likely due to towing or low speed cruising, the fan will increase in speed to maintain a normal opreating temperature.

FEATURES:

* The spal electric fan controller is waterproof and can be mounted inside the vehicle or engine compartment.

* Set up for single or dual fans.

* Uses either the factory (OEM) temperature sensor or aftermarket (aftermarket included for better performance).

* Air conditioner input which triggers cooling fans when a/c kicks on, can also be used as a overide "On" switch.

* Automatically varies fan speed to reduce load on electrical system

  You might want to start a strategic plan ahead of time Todd, to figure how to cool the BB. But you'll be going for the factory look anyway, right?
