My '62 Acadian Build

Well I started working on the car this winter and thought I'd post some "build" pics.

Here's my car in it 's new home taken in November.

Misc 009.jpg

I started with the interior.  Here's what the floor looked like when I bought the car. Looks ok from inside but very bad underneath. He didn't cutout the old rusted floor pans so the new pans and patches are sitting over top the old ones. no Gonna fix that later on.

Misc 035.jpg

Here's the PG shifter hump and console mounting brackets that I added, which were out of my '63 Nova SS.

misc 006.jpg

Console mounted in place.  This is just a mock up of my Lokar floor shifter. I'll make a bracket once the trans is in the car so I can drop it as low as possible without interefering with the tailshaft. I'll make a nice shifter boot too.

misc 011.jpg

Before everyone gets there panties in a knot smile , these seats are TEMPORARY!
I have the correct era '63 bucket seats and rear bench out of my '63 SS which will be recovered and installed I'm hoping next year.  I got these for $75 so I'm throwing them in for now. Lots of lumbar support to boot and they match my black interior somewhat.

misc 006.jpg

With the headrests removed and the bottom brackets cut off the front bucket height was pretty good.  The top of the seat is at the door line.  I welded new shorter mounting bracket to the buckets and drilled holes for them.

The rear seats were another issue.... so out came the butchers knife, grinder and welder. Here's how much foam I cut off the top of the rear seat.

misc 010.jpg

I had to cut and weld portions of the bottom seat frame to fit nicely also. Only need to clean up the top of the existing seat cover and hog ring it up and she's good for now.

misc 003.jpg

I bought some aftermarket black lap belts with chrome air-craft stlye latches for the front and rear.  I made some floor reinforcing brackets tha I cut out of square tubing and all the holes for the belts and seats have been drilled in the floors.

misc 001.jpg

Here's the stock plastic parking brake handle that was broken and needed replacing.

misc 007.jpg

Instead of getting another stock handle,I felt it needed some cool factor so I found a cheap Hurst T handle on e-bay, cut the head off a bolt, threaded it to the handle, drilled a hole for the roll pin and installed it on the factory parking brake lever. I love the look of the handle and the brushed alum matches my interior colours.

misc 020.jpg

I bought this '62 chevy tissue dispenser so I could eventually hide a CD player in it.

misc 024.jpg

I wanted an old school looking tach but didn't want to spend big bucks on an old sun super tach and resistor so, I bought one of the super tach II's and modified it.  Here's how it looked at first.

misc 030.jpg

Dismantled....

misc 033.jpg

Modified.  It's not perfect but it'll do. I'm thinking of adding a small round sticker in the center of the face or adding a shift needle from another tach I have.

misc 034.jpg

Here's the tissue dispenser centered under the radio delete plate with a hinged door (like Todd's write-up).  It's mouted using 2 existing holes in the bottom of the dash on the front side and I made a rear suport bracket for the back side.

For the tach, I mocked it up in a few places, top of column, lower left side off column, knee knocker postion didn't work cause of the parking brake and tissue dispenser so I chose to mount it on the console like some factory GM's had.  I made a hidden mounting bracket that extends behind the console and under the foreward lip and it is held in place with a bolt that clamps against the back of the console.

When I built the cabinet the goal was too spend as little as possible.biggrin

Only had to buy the sandblasting gloves, 2 large hose clamps and some vacuum air filters to vent the cabinet.

My engine and trans have been sitting in my parents garage for some time and they really wanted them out...  so yesterday I brought them home.

Picture 011.jpg

Picture 013.jpg

Next plan is to start painting engine compartment brackets, engine parts and floor pans.

To be contined.... hopefully not too far in the future.

Wow, nice work Joel...

Looks like you didn't spend the long weekend goofing off away from home like some of us did!

Yup, this was a "get things done" kind of weekend. Next weekend we plan on heading out to Kenora to visit some family.

Oh rats, one of the weekends I won't be there. We could have met at Tim's and had a CP coffee night in Kenora!

There is a number of guys on here who seem to go that way pretty often.

If you want to build a bigger cabinet, I see I will be cleaning up a "new" hot water heater that floated in sometime in the last few weeks. Just noticed it in the trees the other day.

At least I got rid of the freezer before it sank in our yard!

No dice Carl, my garage is too packed with stuff. You should turn it into a giant "Hot" parts cleaner.  It already has a heat source. biggrin

Great progress! I really like all of your cool custom touches. How did you modify the tach face? Please let me know, I'd like mine a little more 'retro' too.

Thanks,
Dave

It's kinda crude how I did it but it's only a $50 tach so I gave it a shot.

I found a picture of an original Sun Tach and went through MS Word on my computer to find the correct font they used back in the day. I can't remeber what it was, then I just reversed the colours in Paint so the background was black and the letters were white, printed it and glued it on to the tach face.

This worked good for me because of the location where I mounted my tach, it's not noticable but if it was up ontop of the column or so it might not look good.  I'd check how it looks before glueing.  If it doesn't look very good, I'd have a vinyl decal made that matched the background.

Cool! Thanks for the info! I'll give it a shot ... after I finish the brakes, and finish the cooling system, and get it running well, and finish the interior (not much left except put the steering wheel on and finish the kick panels and vents), and fabricate an extended parking brake cable mount under the driveshaft for more clearance, and finally get the Ansen Sprint Mags & fat tires on, and get it on the ground, and get it aligned, and ... smile.gif

The tach does look cool, thanks again for the technique!

Dave

Thanks for the comments guys, it's giving me some motivation to keep on working on it. There's still a ton of stuff left to do.

Bob, the shop will be much nicer when it's uncluttered. I think I'll start a new thread of my Garage Build. I've got lots of pics of it.
