RE: 1970 Pontiac 2+2 454 Calgary

I LOOKED AT THIS CAR A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. I SENT THE VIN TO GM AND GOT THE PAPERWORK. THE PAPER WORK SAID 300-400 (EST.) WITH THIS ENGINE. THAT NUMBER SEEMED HIGH TO ME, SO I DON'T THINK THERE IS A FIRM NUMBER FOR 454'S. THE CAR IS VERY NICE, BUT NEEDED SOME WORK. I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT THEN AT THIS PRICE. I THINK HE WAS ASKING $12-13,000 WHEN I SAW IT. I TRYED TO BUY ANOTHER CAR FROM HIM BUT HE DECIDED TO KEEP IT (CAN'T BLAME HIM!). I WOULD SAY THIS IS A FAIR PRICE FOR THIS CAR.smile

It certainly is a neat car.  I have to admit, that houndstooth interior is a real knock out for me as well, what an attention grabber and once again so uniquely Canadian.  Those CP product planners really knew how to raid the parts bin in the right way!

As for appraisals, no offence to Todd or anyone else, I think anything not written in the last year is way out of date.  The market is what it is and we all know it is pretty tough out there.  A neighbour of mine is wholesaler of late model cars and I was asking him the other night, what are prices down generally, 20%?  He said it has nothing to do with prices, people have just literally STOPPED buying cars, he has never had so much inventory.  He has a mint 04 LeSabre at his house right now, loaded, elderly gentleman owned, can't even get a bite a $9K.

Bang on Hillar. Late model stuff is a nightmare, old stuff is still hit and mis but more and more showing up everyday, once people start dropping their prices to be the first to sell there will be a chain reaction-remember the early/mid 1990's ? I'm still appraising at what people think is fair because comparisons in the marketplace are advertised that way but and I mean but, reality is another storey. Is it relatively safe to say a lot of models doubled in price between 1998 and 2006/2007 ? well a lot of the owners also have had them that long so they can afford to sell them for 1998 prices if need be.

Lesabre ! I bought an antique two days ago 1997 estate sale @ $800 it has 80000km-I couldn't leave it there, my 03 Sillhouette was $3000 two months ago.

I guess what keeps nagging at me is this would be the perfect car to carry the CP banner! I wonder if I could write some of it off as advertising? I can have the logo produced and put in the side windows and take it to all the meets..

Perfect!  Bill it to your business as a mobile sign   write it off at 2500.00 per year, and sell it to your son, for a $1.00 in 2013    You have to think, like the government..

Talk to Ray, but I'm sure theres no problem buying it as a business vehicle, tax deducting all its expenses and depreciating it some-or lend the money to the business and charge a good interest rate.

Remember, tax deducting and depreciation only count if there are profits to deduct from.

This car would have to made out of bondo to NOT be worth $10K. It's a 2+2 with a 454.

I may have to buy it just for the fan shroud. biggrin

Seriously though, the one on this car seems a lot deeper than mine.  I assumed mine was factory but maybe it has been changed?confuse

We'd have a hard time trying to get CRA to believe a 39 year old Pontiac hasn't been fully depreciated by now. The angle I would go is to use it as a promotional or marketing expense, that would be doable imo but I'm going to look into it further.

the photo's in the kijiji ad are a couple years old, when the seller lived by me.  They were taken in front of his house, with the Lake Bonavista park in the background when taken from the passenger side.  The timeline explains the absence of the redlines in sixtywagon's recent photos.  The houndstooth interior needed work a couple years ago, but the seller had the material, not sure if it's been installed.  It was mainly deteriorated on top of the rear seat, and while the drivers seat bottom was torn, it was stitched up so tough to see at first glance.

Car is # matching LS4 turbo 400, only the carb doesn't match.  The body panels have been painted at various times, and initially each panel was sporting a different shade of red.  The seller had the car polished to make them match better, but not 100%.  Damage to the rear bumper on the drivers side, I don't remember if any damage to the trunk lid.  Door panels were cut for speakers, I think the speaker grills were still there.  I never figured out the deep fan shroud, the big block ones were much more shallow like in Astro Jet's photo (small block ones were deep).

I know of a number of 454 1970 B body Poncho's, including a fully loaded one by Regina, including auto a/c.  My convertible was originally a 350, but the engine in it now is from my 70 Parisienne.

Wayne says the redlines and original wheels go with it.

I don't think I can justify this purchase without selling the 83 TA-even at that I shouldn't be doing it

Wow, thanks to everyone chatting about my 70 LS4, Yes It is A real one, runs real strong. Paint is tired, even at ten feet away. It was repainted years ago, by what I would say, a hit and miss. But atleast it covered the car. The only rusted part repaired that I could find on the car was bottom of front fenders up about an inch or two. Vynl top is original and very very nice. Other than that zero rust, as mentioned, I am from the east coast and trust me I know how talk rust. As mentioned the interior is fair to good with the houndstooth needing attention but is still decent. Some where back in the late 70s, an eight track was installed under the dash, hence doors cut for speakers, speakers still there. Took the remains of eight track out when I bought car. Car is 100% up for any road trip. Tires, brakes, shocks, starter, waterpump, radiator, carb, fuel pump, battery, exhaust (3) times just to get right note and correct bends, THM 400 rebuilt, car will have a trunk full of poncho parts, from a 1970 2+2, that I bought just because I thought was a good idea, as these car one day maybe hard to find parts for. Again zero rust on floor pans, trunk pan, body mounts, frame etc. Never were any repairs done in that area. Needs a paint job, and hounds tooth freshen up. On fan shourd, unsure, have a couple other big block ponchos. the only difference I could see was the rad. If the shourd was bigger, would not clear the pulleys as there is only an half inch clearance. Hope that she gets a good home, time for someone else, to finish this old girl.
Cheers
Wayne

Todd, we all love cars but you do need RRSP's unless you think you can live on $1,600 a month from Governement sources. More than that you need to plan for your son's education. My eldest just got her first degree, cost us $30,000 in tutitions. Luckily she got a $14,000 scholarship to do her Masters.  I've got $12,000 into Jr. so far after two years and youngest is in grade 12 now so she's on deck. I've been lucky that my kids have been able to get high enough grades to be accepted in Toronto. If kids get lower marks and have to go to out of town universities it will cost you 3 times a much.

So in  the last 4 years I've spent $42,000 cash on education, Universities don't take credit! I could have had 4 cars like this, but everyone has priorities. You don't strike me as the kind of guy that puts old steel and rubber ahead of your son's future.

PS: the car need trim rings imo, they never left the factory without them on a 2+2.

Yup, you are right 2+2 came with trim rings, but after a couple hundred dollars on powder coating & clear coating the wheels, did not have the heart to put trim rings back on.  I had a big block 1970 Judge way back when, and it came with no trim rings, so I thought I would try the look on 2+2.
