With the old 4 lamp systems the lows stay on so all 4 are on when in hi-beam mode..
It seems like the cops used to be on us more back in the day for burned out headlights?. I remember when I'd blow a low bulb I'd click 'em on high and pull both low plugs so only the outer 2 highs were on and aim them down if necessary.. At least it gave a chance to get the bulb done before the coppers would haul you over!.

well it could be like my 2007 dodge truck, when I turn on a turn indicator that headlight goes out, apparently so that oncoming you can see the indicator, scared the hell out of me the first time it done it
