Small block Chevy Breathing

Do 283,327 engines breath differently than 350's ?   A lot of 283,327's had that breather tube at back, and oil tube at front of intake                                                I was a cruise tonight in Goderich and when it was over , I beat it for home...3,4,5 000  rpm        When I got home I parked car in driveway .  I moved it later, into garage, and noticed a large puddle of oil..   I opened hood, and oil was on underside of hood, and a lot on chrome timing chain cover area...   I wiped it down, and off, as best I could..  I pulled out oil rubber plug and PVC valve and the other side had a closed grommet    I had not the proper gromet and pipe to air cleaner(yet) so I stuck a closed grommet in hole...   I have picture of covers I got with car.... They have a PCV valve and brather on other side...

These are the Z28 covers       I had PCV valve on left and oil plug for oil adding    and on the right is only one hole and I had a closed grommet on it    The grommet was not a tight fit, so i am guessing  it night have blown out?    The car ran fine with all hole open  and didn't leank at timing cover   I first though it had blown out at the front of oil pan      ?????

I just noticed that the chrome timing cover is not in first photo   hmm  I know why!   the car had a 350 hp cam added laSt year.. and HEI and MSD wires

I think you need a twist and turn cap, not that push in grommet. Look at mine, otherwise our valve covers have the same set up, PCV and oil fill on driver's side , breather on passenger side.

do you have a photo of other side showing your breather?    My valve covers don't have the 2 notches for the oil fill style you have..  Mine are set up for push in..   It seems that using the closed grommet was a no no  but how can it push out so much oil??

Yes, you need a breather in the cover opposite of the pcv valve for it to work properly I think.

This is the only one I can find of the passenger side, it has a breather similar to your first photo. My Valve covers are from an IROC-Z. Have you checked the valve cover bolts for tightness? I think your valve covers are from an 80's era Corvette.

Carl is right though you need a breather. You can us the one from the first photo in that hole I would think. That grommet just doesn't seal tight enough to stop the blow oil.

I was going to run a tube to the lT1 style air cleaner..  I think from reading other on line info, I was stupid to use a closed grommet disbelief  Its a wonder it didnt blow out, as it was not a tight fit  Maybe it was sucked tight?    I will clean it off and check it next week We are going RVing  tomorrow

just put a breather cap on it-don't chance sucking oil from the crankcase only to put it in the carb. Get that engine breathn' so you don't suck the rings out of it.

I agree with Ken, I see these chrome breathers on the shelf at Canadian Tire, probably $7 or so.
