the previous boss from INCO calls on tuesday asking if I'm interested in a three month contract on a research project again starting monday (I'll be there with bells on ! )-then a couple guys that I told start about them being on strike-so I stop to see the labourers at the picket line (wednesday) to see how they feel about us crossing-they refer me to the vise president-(he calls me) its OK to cross let them know if anything fishy is happening inside, then his coworker also called my brother to talk about it, my brother flips about crossing a picket line-I explain to everyone that its not "scab" work-but staff work (INCO subcontracts instead of employing in most cases for staff especially short term) thursday I get all set up with the sub contractor, friday the boss calls-no work-he'll be using current staff from Mississauga to avoid the "contractor" issue, better to hear it sooner than later but it was disappointing.
I've never considered myself "pro" union , nor "anti" union, I've worked in both unionized and non unionized, money and benefits in the first, less B.S. in the latter.
anyway-way too late now but what effect was there here for either party ? I guess having "new" contractor type employees working during a strike would be political in a way of showing that people will work for less benefits,.
on the other side we were research potentially developing products that labourers could ultimately produce. kinda counter productive to not want us there-anyway its over, the work will get done anyway-the boys on strike won't have to "wonder" what the contractors are doing-
Sorry to read about the job falling through, at least though you've got a positive attitude. Never know when a carrot that you will actually get comes your way again. All the best!
