56 261 getting closer to runnin'

Latest additions = new fuel pump, rebuilt carb, and can you identify my coolant catch can?
biggrin.gif

090819.jpg

And of course new radiator and hoses and clamps, new water pump, rebuilt starter, new battery, new plug wires and distributor cap and rotor (points and plugs were fine), a few engine dress-up items, and of course lots of chassis work:
- power front disc brakes with 7" dual booster and new dual master cylinder
- 2" dropped front spindles with roller bearings
- rebuilt rear brakes with new wheel cylinders and self-adjusting mechanism added
- rebuilt front suspension: new ball joints, tie rod ends, tie rod sleeves, urethane control arm bushings, idler arm bushings, control arm bumpers, coil springs, and KYB gas shocks
- rebuilt rear suspension: new custom-made high lift springs, KYB gas shocks on extensions, new U-bolts and shackles
- new custom 1" offset parking brake idler lever for driveshaft clearance
And new Raingear wiper system, Sun tach, interior finishing, wheels and tires, assorted repairs ...
More to do but she will be on the ground running (sort of, good enough to get to the licensing place) within a week or so ...

Dave

She's looking good!
Man that air cleaner is tiny, it's almost as small as your vavle cover breather. smile
Are you sure you wanna drop that big block in there... look at all the room to work on that 6!

Thanks.

That old-school air cleaner for the 1-bbl. carb came with the car, I kind of like how it looks, just like we would do for cheap dress-up and go-fast-wanna-be many years ago smile.gif

You sure are right about room to work in there now ... first comment of most upon seeing under the hood is "Wow there's a lot of room in there" especially since folks are used to today's jam-packed engine compartments where you can hardly see the motor under all the wires and tubes and such. Old and simple, that's my 56. Hmmm, "old and simple" applies to me too! xd.gif

Gonna be on the road this week if it kills me. Major problem is I cannot manage to get a nice smooth paint job on the steering column. Driving me nuts! I finally scraped it all down to bare metal yesterday and wiped it with lacquer thinner and sanded it with 220 and primed it, and today I verrrrrrrrrry lightly sanded it with 400 until it was smooth as a baby's butt then painted it verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry carefully and it is now drying and tomorrow morning we will see if it meets my standards ... other than that it is all ready to go, just have to take it off the jack stands and final torque lug nuts and then off we go to the licensing place, trying to beat the Sept. 1st increase in fees, cross your fingers for me!

Have not eaten any desserts in weeks, been a good boy and been out in the garage smile.gif

Schweppes Tonic Water bottle?

Yeah you got it! It is surprising how many of them you have to empty before you find one where the label is nice and straight smile.gif

Of course I have plenty of raw material since Gin & Tonic is my drink of choice nowadays, the doctor told me to stop drinking beer but he did not mention not drinking these biggrin.gif

SO now I will have to think of an appropriate prize for you, Hillar, since you are the first to correctly answer the question!!!

Might not be until next week, I am on a mission, eh?

Dave

Since I am just sitting here, enjoying a G&T after a good day's work in the garage, and not wanting to delay any gratification, I have one suggestion for a suitable prize:

A pair of (reproduction) 1959 Cadillac taillights!

59Caddy-taillights_1.jpg

59Caddy-taillights_2.jpg

with pigtail and all, can't remember if there are bulbs inside, probably so, but if not the 57's are cheap anywhere, what you see is what you get.

Gotta be a million uses for these babies, if not on the rear of your car, maybe your snowmobile? Or your snow blower? Or mood lighting over your bar (after converting 110 AC to 12 DC, eh)? Or make a battery-operated Viking helmet that lights up, eh??? (yeah I know that you usually see them with curved horns, but when they are all lit up and dazzling, who's gonna complain!?)

Whaddya say, eh?

Dave

I admit being tempted to keep the old 6 and add split exhaust, that always sounded sweeeeet on those cars ... but the lure of the big block, you know what I mean, eh Todd? smile.gif

Fuel tank cleaned (oh yeah there was a LOT of crud in it) and coated inside and painted outside, new S.S. pickup and sending unit, upgraded (preparing for the big block) 3/8" fuel line from tank to pump, plan to install everything this week, keep your fingers crossed this will get her motivating down the road with no major problems!

Thanks,
Dave

I have a 261 Pontiac engine in my 1953 Chevy panel truck. It's not quite at the point where it's running, but close. Can't wait to try it out next spring.
