RE: Nice 76 Bonneville on Ebay

Looks good underneath - surface rust to be expected in our climate. The key thing is that's it's solid and tight.

You know Bob, the '76 Caprice 454 came with a dual exhaust system. I doubt you'd be able to find the parts today but basically it was dual into the converter then dual out with twin mufflers. We used that system shortened on the exit end on our '76 LeMans and a friend's '75 Cutlass back in  the day when Midas used to have them in stock. Even the 454 wagons were dual, the tailpipes exited one side and were over and under like a shotgun barrel.

Keeping her as original as possible, Ray. Besides, if I feel the need for some grunt and noise, there's others in the stable that are more than prepared to offer it up in spades.

Well, well, well. In my search for the build sheet, I ran across a ballpoint pen that has likely negated the '666' plates. biggrin

There it sat, all those years under the rear seat. A blue and silver ballpoint with the following printed on it:

"The Son of man came to seek and to save the lost." Luke 19:10
ED. G. TOEWS
R.R. 1 - St. Marys, Ont.
Ph. (519) 229-6379

The car came from St. Marys. Now, I have no idea why Ed was handing these things out, and no he wasn't the original owner or the son I bought the car from, but I guess I'm good to go. wink

Anyone familiar enough with mid-70's B-bodies to know how the rear seat back is held in place?

I have the bottom out, but it looks like the seat back may be held in place by the left and right seat belt retractor assemblies with the large torx bolts. Comments before I go looking for a very large torx bit?

I'm hoping the build sheet is hiding back there.

This is the retractor I'm referring to; just between the seat back and bottom. Here, the seatback is still in place. Has anyone discovered that they hold the seatback in place in the mid-70's B-bodies?

I've had to remove seat belt bolts before, and don't relish doing it again needlessly. They're usually rusted in place.

I finally got around to applying for the rebate. It took less than two weeks for the cheque to arrive.

Can it get any better than this? biggrin

Good work Bob, it's nice to make those cards work. I used to keep a GM Visa card for around 10 years and I bought 3 new pickups and a van and got around 5000 back after the deals and even now with my gas card and my Visa I get around a thou a year which is like after tax money. It's all money that I have to spend either way so why not take what they'll give you. The last pickup I bought from GM was 8 years ago in October and I haven't spent 1 cent on it except for one set of tires, been a great truck.

is the seat back being held in by the same bolt holding the retractor in?

i just did my 96 caprice and it took me a couple minutes to figure out how the seatback

was held in, its the same bolt as the lower seatbelt assembly, it might be hidden by the large

red plastic cover, mine didnt have such a large piece around the belt and it was still

hard to see it. and it was rusted but i got lucky and got them out, those torx bolts can

be a real pain
