Ya, I thought that was pretty cool. Maybe at that point we'll see big players advertise like GM!
Oh wait a minute, likely not GM since Pontiac is gone...disbelief

Happened on my work computer this morning when I opened CP.

Maybe my boss put it there to keep me away from here....

I am running AVG and no problem. Runing Avast at home and no problems. Also, I have not clicked on the advertising banners either.

Microsoft has designed in a very useful file that can eliminate all sorts of problems during your web browsing experience. This file was used in all versions of Windows since Windows 95.

The file is named the HOSTS file. There is no filename extension, TXT (hosts.txt) or DOC (hosts.doc), etc. It's simply named HOSTS. By entering information about the most bothersome websites (where spam, pop-up ads, etc. come from) in this HOSTS file, we can stop your computer from wasting time and resources downloading all this crap, and also eliminate many problems like we're discussing in this thread.

Still with me? wink Good, 'cause I'm in the computer business.

More to come.......

The server that's showing all those advertising banners at the top of this page is named ServedByAdButler.com.

If we could devise a way to stop your computer from downloading stuff from their site, then voila....less distractions and potential for problems.

Are you still there? wink

Guess what? There is a way to tell your computer to stay here.......rather than go there.

We just tell it to visit the IP Address 127.0.0.1 whenever the page says to visit ServedByAdButler.com. Think of it as a loop back. To computers, the address 127.0.0.1 simply means.........don't go anywhere..........stay home. wink

The next post shows how to perform this magic.

You'll need to use the NOTEPAD program (included with Windows) to edit the HOSTS file. In Windows XP, the HOSTS file is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.

So open the HOSTS file with NOTEPAD, and add the following text at the very end of the file.....
127.0.0.1 servedbyadbutler.com

Don't erase anything that's in the file now. Just add the text listed above. After saving the file, make sure that NOTEPAD didn't add .TXT to the filename. The filename must be only HOSTS.........not HOSTS.TXT

Okay so far?

If you can't find the NOTEPAD program, look in START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES.

After making this change, just close Internet Explorer and then open it back up again. Revisit this site, and tell me what you see at the top of every page.

In the next lesson, we'll discuss how to eliminate all this crap from dozens of ad sites; sites that are making surfing an annoying experience.

Good. That's what we want. Once people learn to edit their HOSTS file, I will provide a list of dozens of those ad servers that are clogging up the Internet and sucking your browser off in all directions to download who-knows-what. I'll post a lengthy list of text that can simply be copied into your HOSTS file to prevent most junk from getting through on many of the websites you visit.

Day-after-day, there's more crap online, more surepticious junk installed on our computers without our knowledge or permission, and the purveyors depend on the fact that most people don't know what's going on or how to deal with it.

It's the wild west out here on the Internet. wink

It was interesting. I got that security alert a couple of times in the last day or two and took the time to read the stuff on it.  I didn't buy into it though.  It obviously is some kind of offshore stuff as the text is either clumsily translated (with bad spelling) into English) or just plain done by illiterates in English.  It reminds me of the Nigeria scam.

The screens look pretty convincing though.

I hope you can get rid of it and the jackass voice that keep coming on every once in a while that says
"Congratulation you won!"

I guess this crap is the price you pay for freedom of the internet?
