In Alberta once you get it registered there is no more checking.
If you can make it move, you can drive it. You can get a ticket if your windshield cracks obscure your view or your lights don't work.

In BC in the lower mainland (Vancouver area) we have whats called AIRCARE or money ripoff is what I call it. You could have a nice fresh engine all new with a decent sized cam running perfect and you take it through and you will fail! Its has been around for I think around 15 yrs or so. It os the biggest pain in the ass trying to get your car through so you can get insurance on it.
They say your emmissions are to high and your car is running to rich. Still no blue smoke or nothing just pure Chevron 94 Octane. Hopefully some other locals here will comment on BC's crappy Air Care and they rip ya as its $25.00 every time you have to try and pass.

In Ontario, emission testing only applies to vehicles model year 1988 and newer, anything older is exempt.  Does Aircare apply to any model year in BC?  Is it only in the lower mainland?

Manitoba safety inspection when you buy it, nothing after that, no emissions, nothing.

I believe that anything if yo have vintage plates or collector plates you can be exempt but anything after 1995 I believe you get tested every 2 years. All in all its royal pain some years I have to wire my carb to run on 2 barrels lots of methol hydrate in the tank plug my pcv valve and still have a hard time to get through. I guess having a lumpy cam and a 700 double pump holley is not good for the Air

So why not get vintage or collector plates and avoid the hassle?

I would but they have very strict rules to apply for those plates beacause it is only around $300.00per year for insurance. Your car also has to be competely stock in apperance which mine is not. They also have some rules on when the car can by driven ie. not to work and back. If you did get them then say you changed your rims or something that would void your plate stauts and if you were in an accident I believe you coverage would be void as well. So its a sticky situation.

If you bring a car into BC it has to go thru an inspection and then Aircare. There's been talk of getting rid of Aircare, but when the doors are closed I'll be happy.
I'm spending money to put my car back to stock so I can run collector plates for $300 a year instead of $1100 a year.
Aircare is only for those who live in the GVRD. So I could use a friends address in Hope and wouldn't have to go thru Aircare. You can also bump the wieght up on your pick-up and as a commercial vechicle it dosen't go thru Aircare.

NB - you have to get your vehicle inspected every year. They'll never drop it, as it's a "revenue stream" .

Kim, is that cost for plates or insurance??? Our historic plates in Ont/ are $18 & specialty ins. ranges on appraisal of car! ie. $20,000 value is around $200 to $250 regular plates are $76.00 + normal ins. Pete

Pete
The $300 is the insurance only. I just renewed my pick-up and licence fee is $108.
With my years of safe driving and other discounts I save $1300 a year or my 1995 Chevy would cost me $2400 a year confuseconfuse

Just to clarify. The Ontario emissions testing only applies if you reside in the southern part of the province. Northern Ontario is exempt.
Regular plates in the southern part of the province cost $74 - northern part cost is $37.

Historic plates are only $18 and like in BC intended for "unaltered" cars. They are being greatly abused but many.

Believe Nova Scotia, like New Brunswick, requires a safety check every year.
