Don't know about 3rd gens but the computers in 4th gens have tended to be flawless unless you really screw them up by trying to reprogram them multiple times.  I am always leery about buying used electrical parts unless the seller is willing to test or demonstrate that it is functional.

Why not poke around on some 3rd gen boards and ask if these commonly fail and what a good price for a replacement would be?
