so,, I went on a fact finding mission after I read the ad,  ALL where built with 305's , production #'s  vary.

Value seems to climbing on these cars,  but they is a large spread.

That's overpriced, but there are cheapies around. V8 rear drive, Nascar provenance. Yup. Worth a look.

A friend of mine in Florida who deals in Pontiacs had one of these.  Mint condition, original paint; couldn't give it away for $6K US.  Like the poll says, keep walking.

It seems odd that about 1/3 of the total were in Canada. We normally get 10% if we are lucky.

That would sure be top dollar for that car, but if it's what you want.....

I'm voting keep walking but that's based on my personal feeling/priority. You know best what you want and what you can afford.

Don't buy it thinking it's a great musclecar investment would be my thought.

It's a real cool looking car. I have owned two of them, when one was 2 years old second one when 5 years old. Was a real looker only, no performance to speak of but back in 1988 and 1991 were sharp cars. Here is some of the pooper scooper on this car:

1986 Pontiac Grand Prix homologation special
Y97 2+2 package
LG4 corporate 305 V8 4 bbl 165 hp / 245 lbs of torque
200R4 transmission
3:08.1 rear gears with limited slip diff 10 bolt
car came fully equipped, with all toys including ralley gauges and F41
came in one colour configuration only, as you see in the above ad
never proven but 2 were marron in colour, PHS has no record of these 2
production was 1225
came out feburay 1986
cars were built in mich.
retail at that time was $18,210
were poorly recieved by dealers and public, most of them were sold at year end at GM auctions at past model prices.

Hope this answers some of the questions. There one for sale here in Calgarykijiji it needs some attention asking price is $2500.

RE: 2 + 2 aero coupe ??

Pontiac "Aero Coupe"
1x1.gif
Its easy to see why the SSs became such collector's items, but one car you seldom hear about is the Pontiac counterpart to the SS Aerocoupe.  The Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 was only made for 1986, and only 1,118 were produced.  Like the SS, the Grand Prix also came standard with a 305 and the aero package which included a rear spoiler and custom front fascia.

Oddly enough, although the street SS and the 2+2 were sister cars, the distinguishing "bubble" rear glass pieces were not interchangeable.

Hey 427 Carl I had heard of that production number as well.
The main difference between the mone SS & 2+2 were not that much in the performance mode
monte SS came with the 305 V8 HO, whick gave it another 15hp & 20lbs of torque with 3:73 gears, monte SS was 100lbs lighter
quarter mile times when both were new, monte SS 16:10 & the 2+2 17:7

Personally I love them, if I were to buy one it would have to be mint, as good luck finding parts for it. There was one for sale just outside of Englehardt Ontario a couple of years ago.

You can't compare a Monte Carlo SS and 2+2 of this vinatge. One is a well thought out perfomance car for it's time the other was a slapped together piece of junk with a pasenger car engine. Nonetheless I think that these long window cars are worth something, but no where near $16,000, either the Aero Coupe or 2+2. It still showed that GM cared about winning on the track and in fact this vintage Monte Carlo was the king, the 2+2 was an also ran.

I love the front end treatment on these cars but the glass fastback does nothing for me.

I'm surprised how many of these i've seen in person/for sale in Ont. on kijiji. Saw one not long ago i think it was listed at 5-6K, but i don't remember where in the province it was. I've only been up close to one Monte SS with the rear glass treatment. They seem more elusive than the GP's. Either way that rear window would put me off getting one, for parts purposes. Same for the front end on the GP. I know about cars not going up in value a lot, i mean my Trans Am is not going to ever be a top dollar car but i bought it because i have always wanted one. If i decide to sell i don't know how i'd fare, nevertheless i know i can't ask an outrageous amount. While a cool car i'd still pass on these GP's.

I was surfing the net and found this blog.  You folks seem to know quite abit aboot these cars and I want one.  I would like to put a collestion together of the NASCAR homolgated cars since I got my 69 Cyclone Dan Gurney Special and realized how few times manufactures had to do this... 69 with the Spoilers and Taladega, 70 Superbird, and 86 M/C and 2+2.  I will have to hit the lottery to get a Bird but the others are within reason.  So my questions I hope may be answered here:
I have located a 2+2 that is claimed to be the original owner 51k miles.  She states that the car has 1 tail pipe. I know the M/C's are dueled out thru 1 Cat.  Since the 2+2 is down on horsepower it seems to reason that the car came with single exhaust but all the pics I have found show cars with 2 tail pipes.  Also she claims the car has never been wrecked.  I noticed that the grill emblem (Pontiac 2+2) is located on the passengers side whereas all the pics I find show it to be on the drivers side.  This is the VIN 2G2GJ37H3G2288036. Can anyone tell me the number it relates to out of the 1118 made? Is it the 36th (036 being the last digets) made.  The reason I ask is that my Cyclone is in the Winged Warrior registery and is the lowest known VIN thus is the 1st known survivor... she wants 6k so the price seems inline with trends just not sure if the car is legit 51k because of the duals and the grill emblem

First, welcome here. Hopefully we can get you to kick that Ford habit! Just kidding of course. I have never seen anyone bashed here for liking non Pontiac vehicles...

The GM parts book lists the grille emblem on the driver's side, just as you say.

Oh, and I should add the parts book also lists RH and LH tailpipes for the 2+2 package so dual outlets is correct for that car.

The exhaust system on the GP and MC SS are totally different.

MC SS is a pretty much a dual exhaust. It used one giant Corvette converter, two in two out into dual resonators.

The GP, is single all the way into a muffler at the rear which has two outlets.

I had both cars.  It wouldn't  be a surprise that now the car has lost it's dual outlet muffler after all these years have passed.

here info with different  production numbers!

In 1986 a 2+2 model was offered for homologation of an Aerocoupe body for NASCAR competition. 2+2 specific pieces are an aero nose, bubble rear glass and a fiberglass trunklid with integral spoiler. All 2+2 were optioned similarly with a corporate 305 four barrel, 200-4R 4 speed automatic transmission and 3.08:1 rear axle ratio. All were silver with 2+2 decals and striping, with 15X7 steel rally II wheeels.

Approximately 1225 1986 Grand Prix 2+2's were built in 1986.
