A couple of neat old coins (or) What else do you collect?

If your an old car guy like me you appreciate other antiques. When on vacation in the Caymans we visited a cool antique store with a number of items retrieved from the ocean (shipwrecks etc). I picked up a couple of interesting coins. While not really valuable, they do have an interesting history.

Here is the first coin:

Coin1.jpg

This coin was on board the Admiral Gardner which sank Jan 25 1809. Here's some information on this ship and these coins:

"The 11-year-old Admiral Gardner was an East Indiaman, one of the proud, tall ships that made the regular and perilous journey between England and India during the 18th and 19th centuries. 145 feet in length, she was captained by William John Eastfield, a man who already made the journey many times in the past. He knew the hazards the trip had in store, and as he set sail from Deptford, on the River Thames, that day in 1809, he would already have been studying the latest charts.

Part of his cargo consisted of coins to be used by the British East India Company. The majority on these coins were copper 10 cash that were struck at the Soho mint in Birmingham, England. The copper for these coins came from the Rose Copper Co. in Cornwall. They were selected because their copper deposits contained significant amounts of silver. Consequently, each of the cash coins contains some silver. The arms of the East India Co. are on the obverse, above the date. The reverse bears a mughul inscription and an "X" denoting the denomination of ten cash.

As the ship left the safety of the River Thames and proceeded beyond the Straits of Dover, a very sudden storm developed that pushed the ship on to the Goodwin Sands. These sands were named for the eleventh century earl of Goodwin, whose now-submerged lands the sands once were. When the earl's son, King Harold II, was slain at the Battle of Hastings, the Norman conqueror confiscated his property and it is said that it was the earl himself whose curse caused the waters to slowly encroach over the land, a trap for unwary seaman for all eternity.

Some seaman were rescued as the ship bore the thunderous waves but others, unfortunately, lost their lives.

After a half century, all trace of the ship had been lost and she was just another entry in Lloyd's Register.

Finally in 1985, with modern equipment, the wreck was discovered and some of its treasure, like the 10 cash shown here, were recovered."

Here is the next coin:

Coin2.jpg

These US 5c-sized bronze coins are "duits" ("cents") issued by the Dutch East Indies Company ("VOC") for use in the orient in the Spice trade in the 1700s and 1800s. Most were headed for Indonesia, though these coins were also in circulation in other areas, such as the Straits area (Malaysia, Borneo), and India/Sri Lanka. So it's a relic of the spice trade, and that's where its true value lies, in history. This particular coin was found buried with a bunch of similar coins on a beach in Sri Lanka. There were millions issued, so it isn't rare albiet interesting.

So, what about you guys? Do you collect any other antique items? I also have a 1937 Westhinghouse Tombstone radio and a 1910 Columbia Granafola that I restored about 18 years ago. Both work great. I used to have a pile of antique radios but sold them off over the years.

I also have some old newspapers including one from the great flood in London Ontario in 1937.

I just love old things. Heck, even my wife is older than me! biggrin

Very interesting Todd.

I have some coins as well, nothing valuable and mostly Canadian, lots of silver dollars, 1957 probably my oldest. I have some folding money too Centennial dollar bills with serial # 1867-1967, go figure that one out, how the mint ever decided to print thousands of dollars with the same serial # is still a mystery. They corrected that and I have some regular serial #'s too. Have a few 1937 vinatge 20's.

I have hockey cards from 1957 on. My prized set is the 1964-65 Topps Tall boys, 110 cards - book value is more than old Pontiac ! I have other original six items too. My single most prized possessions in this lot are Bobby Orr rookie card and a Durham corn starch 5X7 of Bill Barilko.

Lots of auto magazines too.

Ouch! We collect bills apparently. (Not the currency kind.)

Very cool coins! Imagine, something that was in the posssession of an Englishman in the Straits of Dover no less, ends up in the hands of a Canadian almost a quarter of a century later. Strange days indeed!...

I used to collect comic books...kept two old issues of Detective Comics, one from 1946, the other 1948. I've got some hot wheels hanging around. Got rid of my GI Joe and Transformers over the past few years. Got an old ten dollar bill, the 1979 issuing, an old 1 and 2 of the 1986 vintage. I've got a bunch of coins, oldest at the house is a 1919 American penny. My mom has the cool ones that she got from my grandfather. They include an 1859 Canadian penny, a well worn 1885 US penny, some Belgian and French coins from 1916-1917, a 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign from 1897 i believe. There's also a German 2nd Reich coin from 1917. He was originally from England and was in WW1, i'm trying to still research his time in the army and whether it was with Canada or England.

Speaking of Corgi, when I was a kid I would get about 10 bucks for my birthday. I'd run out to the nearest K Mart and buy one of Corgi's semi trucks. Corgi quality was quite good back then. They all got destroyed except one -the last one I bought which was a Mack truck with a flatbed trailer, painted Olive Drab with a Centurion tank. I still have it in decent condition. I since bought two more of the trucks I had, MIB. They cost more than $10 though!

They are on display along with some of my surviving models of my youth in my sons room

I've got some Corgi F1 cars from the early 70's, mint in their boxes, spent enough on those. I've got a few of those models too. Got the JoHan 64 Dodge to be built, the Desoto half built and the 69 Super Bee built. Also have a Challenger to build and a built Plymouth wagon which really needs to be stripped and redone.  Most of the kits i have are Mopars i collected about 15 years ago.  All the kits are at my dads.

Johan was the best model company as they had the "weird" cars like the 60 Plymouth Wagon. My friend Mike is on here from time to time. I hope he will see this thread and post pics of his collection. His basement looks like a 1960's hobby shop!

A while ago I was regretting not having kept my Mongoose and Snake funny car models and car carriers. What's cool though is that they have a Snake funny car and carrier going through BJ this month!

Geez, I forgot to mention my Hot Wheels collection, from 1967 to present, over 600.  The '67's are my own originals, store them in that wheel carrier. Better take some pics and post.

go to www.jaylenosgarage.com  About a month ago Jay posted a video of Don Prudhomme at Jays shop with a restored 70 Cuda funny car, and Don found and restored the car carrier.  Really cool retro stuff, I presume it's the set going through BJ this month.

I wish I would have kept my Hot Wheels and Sizzlers.  My first one was a rust colored 'Beatnik Bandit', followed by a purple 'Silhouette'.  I had about 25 or so and the wheel carrier.  (Somehow I had 3 'Pythons' in varying colors).    When I hit my late teens, I let my young nephews play with them and they either got lost or destroyed.

We would race all summer in my backyard which was ideal. We had a porch about 10 feet above ground, we'd open the window and attach the starting gate, amass eveybody's track and make a run at least 80 feet long. The yard was sloped to the rear so it was a fast run. I must have had at least three of every car released then but plenty would blow apart during races in crashes and other mishaps. Only my survivors are in the case now. Just like musckle cars back then plenty of the Hot Wheels were modified and custom paint added. That Fleetside was a good racer because of it's wieght but it was prone to crashing and burning. biggrin

PS: Still have the "Hot House" set up too.

There was a "rich house" in Cobourg that used to hand out Hot Wheels at Halloween. I used to go back for seconds : )

I really like the look of my '50s Dinky "torpedo-style" race cars.
