Headed back to work

After a Christmas break its time to head back to work. Three weeks off goes by way too fast, but we have to do it sometime.
The type of job I'm in we work three straight weeks and the best part is then three weeks off. Alot of flying as I leave from New Brunswick to Whitehorse and back again. Luckly enough I have Internet in my office at the mine site and keep in the loop of things (like checking car sites, looking for parts etc. )
Best wishes to all, will be back on in Whitehorse.

I've been at this for 8 years, started in Red Lake Ont., for 1 year, Ekati Diamond mine for 5 years, Babysat two tunnel boring machines in North Vancouver for a year and now at Wolverine mine in the Yukon. I don't think I'll go back to the 5 day a week jobs unless I have to, not enough time off!

I just don't think I could ever do what you do. I would miss the kids and my wife too much. I have a relative who takes jobs and is remote very often. Yeah, the money is appealing but whenever he rubs that in my face I remind him I sleep in my own warm bed with my own warm wife every night! You can't put a price on that...

Wow. We have a lot of folks with diverse jobs on here. It's great! Do you maintain those machines? Are you a tech?

I hear ya guys, when I was a Transport truck instructor, they used to send me all over Ontario, staying in low cost motels [read sleazy] poor food & in winter freezing my A$$ off in Smooth Rock Falls. I finally quit, when a few students never showed up for their lessons & was told I wasn't going to paid for that time lost. I like retirement, even though I only get CPP I'm getting by with a few odd jobs in the garage, but they cut into my Pontiac time!!!

It's not for everyone , that's for sure , it becomes a life style. when I've interviewed people, I point out to them that it's a different lifestyle. you have to be able to put your life on hold. a strong relationship helps, my kids were born while I worked a northern job, they don't know it any other way. I do see that they have a different bond with the wife than me, not worse or better ....just different.

the upside...I take 2 sets of holidays in the summer,, that gives me 6 weeks home, the kids are only off school for 8 weeks in summer, so there is a lot of quality time to just be family.

last summer we left the day I got home with the truck and trailer, spent 18 days and over 5000 km out to the west coast and back. best holiday we had in a long time. and then 3 weeks later..did another 3 weeks home doing whatever we wanted.

I've been home for 5 weeks now, healing up after back surgery ,, I'm really liking being home, I know when I go back , it is GOING to be hard being away.
