window problem, need help

i got the trim off the drivers door to change the door handle on the Trans Am.  I needed to put the window down to get the top part of the trim.  I tried to put it back up, it won't budge.  It's power windows, what could be the problem?

If it still doesn't work I'd take a test light and check if see if u got power on the door panel and if so check if u got power at the window motor, if u got power and u can hear the motor forcing its probably stuck somewhere on the channel or regulator.

I'd check for power first then go from there, I had a 78 Transam new and after 3 months window wouldn't go down, found out switch on door panel crapped out

Would a multimeter work for testing?

You could try disconnecting the switch and shorting the connectors in the terminal. I would assume there's three wires- one ground, one for up and the other for down? Find ground and use a short piece of wire to bridge to one of the other connectors. If the switch was bad then the window should work.

yes the wires often break inside the boot in the door jam-power or ground.

seeing you removed the panel and were in the door maybe the plug on the motor itself is now loose causing a poor or no connection-also where your plugged in on the door switch besure the connection is good, shorting the terminals works good too to eliminate possiblities.

pretty simple system-you'll figure it out

just leave the window down when you drive it, i was told you look cooler that way!!! Oh, sunglasses too! LOL I found the switches and the connectors were fussy when i did mine. Check out the condition of the wires through the door for sure, and its not too hard to replace them.

I am thinking that may only be a two wire on that car. If so, power one side, ground the other and test. If that does nothing, reverse power and ground wires and test again.

I haven't had a chance to get back at it since Saturday. Been busy with family stuff and now we found moisture in our kitchen cupboards. Gotta take it all apart to check the drywall. Then find out what caused it.

I do have some extra window switches that i can try. I looked inside the door and hard to tell if anything has come unplugged at the motor.

As for the kitchen a couple cupboards were damp, screws rusted and a little mildew on the back. I've ripped off part of the thin backing, that tough cardboard stuff. Drywall doesn't look bad. Got to get the rusted screws out of the bottom and remove the piece of wood acting as an anchor to see what is going on behind. I don't know if it was just moisture in a closed cupboard or what. It's a big cabinet at the back corner of our kitchen along an outside wall, only a few years old. I hope i don't have to take it all apart and look behind the wall but we'll see. So far it isn't looking too bad.

Finally got our kitchen put back together. First time having to replace drywall and it went ok. Thankfully the cupboards cover up my handywork. I had to seal some drafts outside and that has solved the problem. So yesterday i got looking at the window again. I tested the wires at the switch. There's 4, black ground, blue, pink and brown. I didn't have a piece of metal wire, i stuck the test leads in the connectors and got nothing. I tried another switch just in case and again nothing. I'm going to see how the fuse panel is connected but i'm guessing that isn't the problem. I haven't looked inside the door yet to see how things are connected so i still have that end to check. Just wanted to update.

Ok, the reason I ask is I think the master switch has one power wire to it that would make both windows work. That should mean that the wire is not continuous from the switch to the motor, or the motor is bad.

Hmmm.....

I think it's the motor. I've got a couple extra ones, i'm just not looking forward to trying to pull the old one out of there!

Ok it's been a while since i've looked into this. I don't know when i'll start at it but i do need to ask a another question. Since the window is down, how do i get it out or at least up out of the way?

If you can't get the motor to work, the only ways are to unbolt the mechanism and slide the rollers out of the channel, or unbolt the glass from all the hardware.

I forget, do you have a parts book or a GM service manual? If not, I could either fax or scan and email a parts picture at least. (tonight, late)

Carl i've got both and was just looking over the service manual this morning. I was thinking i might be able to unbolt some of it so it's good to know i was on the right train of thought. Do i need to take the channel guides right off do you think to have enough space? I see that the window is riveted onto a piece at the bottom. I don't want to have to take that apart. I wonder if i can just get it up out of the way enough to prop it up without taking the glass right out of the door. It may be a while before i do anything though, tough to find the time but i'll keep updating when i can.
