RE: window problem, need help

I am guessing you can maybe detach it and then pull it all the way up, then wedge/prop/tape it up out of the way somehow while you work in the door. You sure have to make certain it can't fall in the door though!

I'm going to try to get the window right out first, definately the safest and smartest thing to do.

If you have extra motors. can you hook up the wires to the new motor before you take anything out and see if the new motor works with your wiring.

I shorted out my window on my 87 Toyota. It also did in a $400 part under the dash.
With power windows grab the window and pull up on the window while you push the up button, sometimes it's stuck or jammed and the motor needs help(grease is gone)
A battery charger will power up your window as well.

Thanks guys. Today would have been a great day to work on the car, weather was perfect to move it outside so i could get at my parts stash. Nevertheless here i am at work until 7 tonight and the weather isn't promising for over the weekend. Once i get a chance to get out on a good day i'll try a couple things. If i'm going to try moving the window while i try the switch to get it to close i'll have to push from the bottom, it's too far down in the door to lift from the top. And i will make sure to try the other motors before going to all the trouble of getting the old motor out. I hadn't thought of those things, that's why i check with you guys here.smile

Did you ever get your windows up???
I just had to put mine up with my crappy tire battery charger. They go up real slow on the high setting.

Kim,

I've been too busy to get out to do anything. I'm planning on getting out Friday to fire up the car, move it out of the garage so i can have some space to look at it and see what i can do. If i need to then i'll be able to look around in my part stash for another window motor. Would be nice to at least get the window up for the time being.

So i got out yesterday and tested the spare motor i have. It works, so the one i have in there now is toast. I don't imagine hooking it up to the battery charger would do any good. How do i make a connection with the aligator clips if it is possible? Besides that, anyone here ever change out power window motors?

Ground to the door and the pos to a small pointy screwdriver that you can fit in where the wires go in to the connector, or even to a old test light. I don't know what your wire codes are, but mine are the two green were back windows and the 2 blue were the front.
I changed out my drivers door and it only has 3 bolts to the door and take of the wires to the motor.
Since you have a spare motor......you should see where the bolt holes are and also where it plugs in.

Success! I got it up, the window i mean. I didnt change the motor out. Just tried the rubber mallet on the door as i pressed on the window button. Now my question is should i replace the motor anyway I played with the window a bit more and it continued to work. I want to know before i go ahead and put the panel back on.

You know Randy, in the past I've had the odd power window that was intermittent but it always seemed to act up after sitting for quite a while unused. I now try to make a point of operating all of them at least every week or two. It seems to help a lot.

I am guessing they must accumulate some sort of layer on the armature that acts as an insulator between there and the brushes.

If it was mine, I'd reassemble it without changing anything. However, I'm cheap.......!

I still think it's the motor. I do have an extra one so it's just a matter of replacing it. I say this because when i did hook up another motor to test it worked instantly, no hesitation at all. For now i might chance it and just put everything back together. I can always take it apart again and break down to getting it replaced. When i get it finally out for the season we'll see if regular use will keep it from acting up.

Window not sticking which is good. I see that the window is out of the track at the back arm. How do i get the window arm up high enough to get it back into the track?

Pictures would help. It was one of the very first things I did so I do not remember the details but it was a bugger to get back right ...

1.jpg

I do remember that it took a while to get the window seated in the new track ...

2.jpg

And I had to dink around a lot to get the crank lever into place ...

ANd the Fisher Body Manual was priceless
