Another Ontario Tax Grab

Well we can thank "Mc GOOFY" again, I have a tenitive deal on my 64 Catalina, was going to make a "straight trade" for an equal value car, but on contacting the lic. office, they tell me I will have to get the "new" car appraised & pay the 8% tax on it's value. I spoke to my appraiser about this & he said they just started this, so I asked him about "low balling" the estamate, said he can't do it because as soon as I put insurance on it with a higher value, he would loose his lic. There's no money changing hands here, but thay want their tax on a non-existant sale!!!  Just "BEND OVER AGAIN" WHILE THEY RAM IT TO YOU!!! Not even a KISS!!!!! Think this deal just went in the toilet. I'm not paying $1600 + tax & another $150 for appraisel for no money exchanged???

Yep. The screwing never stops. When I bought my '76 Bonneville, I had to have it appraised for tax on the sale.

Then I had to have it reappraised for the insurance company. I said, "Hey what about the PST appraisal done just the other day? Why can't you use that?".

Their answer? "Not good enough. We want one with photos and description."

Geesh!

If "both" cars are appraisded ($150.00 ea.) then its still a 0.00 exchange?  If you bought a classic or not classic car, at a dealer, and traded your 64 in, then there would still be no tax due..... confuse

Yep, I had to do the same thing when I bought my 59 Dodge. PLUS, they tried to hammer the seller for PST from when he brought car over the border in 1977 (he never bothered to transfer the car into an Ontario ownership back then). He had a receipt to prove he paid tax back then and the girl said (oh, that was a different rate back then). I said "So what, the car came over BACK THEN!" She had to call the tax office. 20 minutes later they said he didn't have to pay but he "better keep that receipt just in case".
Idiots

Speaking of getting royally screwed by the government. When I bought my '61 GMC in August I of course had to get it appraised. Can't get you for an E-Test on it so they'll get you that way.
Then, I bought some Year of Manufacture plates for it. $88.00 for the plates, which is fair enough.
Here's where the real cost comes in. Within the 6 day period, I had the truck put in my name as unfit-unplated. I got it safetied but of course, the vintage plates have to be sent to the Ministry of Government Services so they can approve or deny whether they're restored good enough for use.
For them to do this, it's $235.25!! It gets better. Because my vehicle was unfit-unplated, but then
I got it safetied, I spent $10.00 for a new ownership so it read fit-unplated. It then cost $11.16 to send it off to this Ministry of Government Services. Now, when I get them back, I have to spend another $10.00 for an ownership that reads fit-plated (with the vintage plates on it) but also, another $74.00 for the annual sticker. If $428.41 isn't ludicrous just for a set of vintage plates for that finishing touch on a classic, then I don't know what is. They have us working until June 1st of every year just to pay taxes. They won't be happy until we're working until December 31. When that time comes, the colour blue will no longer be allowed for government parties, only RED!
Just a little more than irked I tell ya.

RST appraisals are available from licensed appraisers for $40 mobile service, used car lots will do them for $25 - $35 if you bring it to them.

This has been a requirement since october 04 for fit vehicles and jan 05 for unfit.

The MTO offices are independantly owned and often interpret the rules differently

yes and appraiser wouldn't want to give it two different values one for tax then one for insurance but if you have a shady appraiser that will do it lighter for tax you could have someone else do the insurance one.

I've got no problem with them wanting an appraisal on a vehicle that was sold, but on a "trade" where there is no money exchanged, how can they charge you "SALES TAX" when both cars are equal value, that's nothing but a "TAX GRAB"  Robbery, without the gun & mask!!! Just think ahead to when the HST comes in & the rate goes to 13% or 14% if Harper gets his 1% increase they are flirting with, the sales of everything [including trying to sell a classic car] will go in the dumpster. The underground economy will take off, but you can't hide selling a car underground unless it goes to the States. Even if I can get the other car "low balled" it's still costing me & other guy Taxes on something that there sholdn't be, "Boy, I"M Ticked" & yes no matte which party gets in, they do an "about face" on what they said & put the blocks to you, all the while smilling at you,& thinking " you dumb bastards" did you really believe what we said"

kinda doesn't make sense to be paying tax on value either way-when I buy a pair of shoes that were $100  on sale for $50 I pay tax on $50

I think its McQuinty an the HST in Ontario, and I recall Harper lowering the federal GST by 2%
