68 SD auto to manual ...decrease value?


I am toying with the idea of switching my 68 SD over to a 4 spd.. from an auto.  
1 - the car does not have it's born with drivetrain.

I'm considering putting a borg warner T-10 behind my 427 with a 3.31 posi.

I'm leaving the 396 on the engine stand for now as it needs  a build and the 427 is ready to go.

My question is ,  do you think it will decrease the value , converting to a 4 spd car?    I won't be using a muncie like it would have had in 68 if it was an original car.

It certainly won't decrease the value....smile

   I switched my car, and spent $3000.00(more) to make it a 4 speed Muncie    Car is valued the same, as the 200.00 auto that was in it..

If it is not a matching numbers car, non-original for the most part, go for it! It's your car. If you are thinking value only, keep it as original as you can. If you are thinking fun meter, build it the way YOU want it and ignore all this free advice we are giving you!

Your car has a great kit for a 5 spd so skip the 4 speed. Cut the tunnel hump carefully and store it away for the next owner.

yeah,, my friend just finished putting a TKO behind a raunchy 455 pontiac in a 67 Lemans,, it is wicked, 2nd gear has legs , and that 455 is built to wind.. VERY cool !!

I hear you on the TKO,, I'll have to start setting pennies aside. the only reason I would use the borg ,is because I have it . The TKO would give the car the ability to do some distance driving , which is a consideration for Saskatchewan cruising.

What is worth more? An SD396 Beaumont automatic documented matching numbers, or the same car except someone has done a nice conversion to a factory 4 speed???

Nothing beats rowing your own oars. I love the smooth automatic 5- and 6-speeds in my truck and my wife's Mustang, makes them easy to drive, but the Fun Car has to have a stick shift, eh?

Doesn't sound like you are building a "collector car" since the original "matching numbers" motor is long gone, I'd say put the T-10 in.

I understand that a modern tranny like the TKO would add driveability on the highway, but (1) you've already got the T-10 so why spend the extra $3500? (you'd need a new driveshaft too) and (2) cruising at 3000 RPM at highway speeds may suck up the gas but somebody has to use that last drop of fossil fuel it might as well be you, eh? and (3) that 3000 RPM highway cruise means (a) nice motor sounds better than any stereo and (b) when you need to pass you are right at the fat part of the torque curve, stab that pedal and hang on buddy off you go!!!

What's the "value" of cars like ours anyway? The REAL value is what it means to you, it's your car, you can do whatever you want with it. Enjoy it!

        The majority seems to favor the standard transmisson, and I always thought it would "add" value..  I will add the cost, to the selling price of my car, and see who grabs on!    lol   thanks

do what you want to your car! but always keep the original parts because someday you might sell, or you might change your mine and it will be worth more if you have those parts for the buyer to go back to original..

I converted my non numbers 67 custom to a 4 speed and have no regrets. It's a non #s car so I think you should add or delete any options you want. It's an easier decession on a custom though. I can understand your hesitation to do it to an SD car.

the only major expense with this will be the new clutch, I have the 621 bellhousing, so I can use the big clutch. and maybe the Z-bar unless 6 cyl. ones are the same?? I have all the brackets and pedals in a donor 6 cyl 68 beaumont. from what I can see in the GM manual , just the pushrod is different. Z- Bar appears to be the same??

any input is appreciated.

Sounds like you are well on your way    I think the Beaumont parts are more common   69 Belair was my big helper
