It's hard to sell a project car right now. I'm dumbstruck at the cars available right now for reasonable money. Realistic Feb 2010 price on this is not going to make the seller happy.
I know as I'm trying to sell a few myself and it just ain't happenin' in the old car market.

Its a weird market for 'in between' cars... a basket case would be $6-8k, but then the restored 67 SD clone from south dakota sold for around $26k in the height of the market... so compared to that, this one is $10-15k high... and that's throwing in labour for free!

I wonder how much of the interior peices are there?

I'm still surprised on the comments on car prices. Around here (lower mainland BC), you can't get a car painted for under $15k and that's far from a frame off job. So are you guys figuring the car without the paint job, drive train etc, is not worth a nickle?
If you think it's 10-15k too high, that's what your basically saying. I'm building two cars right now, and doing almost everything myself, and I'm in the industry, and I'll tell you, $25k doesn't go far these days. I know a couple other guys on this site building right now, and I know they are in deeper than me. Are you guys building? or haven't built for many years? Just wondering if we're missing something.

I think the comparison being made is there are 'done' cars out there for the same asking price as this one. Not saying they are better or worse. The one at the top here would be a fresh car, but still needs 10 G min. of finishing.

I know I sure have lost touch of the cost of doing a resto. I am like you Bud, and have done most of the work myself, by the time I roll my 70 Lemans Sport convertible out , I will be 15 G with out a rebuilt engine.

I wouldn't have believed it, had someone said that up front.


on a side note, a friend just picked up his 96 3/4 diesel 4x4 truck after a complete body panel replacement and respray, final bill with all new metal ,,,,,,,,15 G !!!! he's a little in shock. So,, saying it's 15K for a paint job on the coast,,,,well,,,same here in SASK !!!!

I (personally) build all my own cars.  i do 100% of the work myself and do not include labour time when i figure out what i have spent on my projects.
Its all hobby and all fun, so it doesnt count.

If a guy farms stuff out, the labour costs are huge, but dont affect the resale of the car:

Example, i could /bodywork and paint my car myself to a show level for say 2000 in materials.(just an example)
Guy # 2 has the same body and paint job done at a shop for 15,000.

bottom line:  both cars come out looking the same,  is one worth 13,000 more than the other?

just an example to think about.



Just another example:
Same story over and over,  guy has 150,000 invested in resto.   Get real!
about 120,000 of that is labour.   not very realistic is it.


Sorry for being a bit off topic, but it is something to consider when buying a car.
Look at the quality of the work, not just the recipts for work done.

Same out here in manitoba:
Body and paint will run 10,000 to 20,000 depending on rust and such.
Not cheap any more!

You make a very valid point. I think it boils down to the fact that the price of a finished car these days is probably not a realistic figure if you compare it to building one. Way better off to compromise slightly and buy one done, save a pile of money over building one and maybe not have exactly the colour or interior or powertain or options that you would consider ideal.

Unless of course you are like me. Although it's frustratingly slow very often, I love assembling a car. Way rather do that over buying one unless it's a screaming deal.

 that's kind of what i was alluding too! You shouldn't be surprised if you have also been tracking selling prices over the past few years, not just build prices.  I have built my own car, but it was a long time ago, and i started with a solid vechicle (my car cost about $10k including original purchase price, but i shop well! and it was a looonng time ago! I could have bought a turnkey 67ss396 for $9k at the time).  It just makes selling a partial project a money losing proposition, and selling a complete car an even more money losing proposition, the math doesnt add up... but who cares? it's a hobby not a business for most.  Some can make a few $$ flipping, but not in restoring... the last thing i worry about is the money i spend on my hobbies over the years!

My comments however are based on real world selling prices for 67 convertibles in the past few years (not on BJ dreams!). There are rough ones at $6k, solid 'rough' at $10k, but then the green fully restored SD clone sold for around $26k at the peak of the market, and was re-listed more recently at around $28k.  There are 2 yellow ones that are complete and driveable that can be bought for $18k and the other $22k (bbc) 

So would you pay $25k for this one? That number probably represents everything he might have into it at the moment...the market will decide real value, not asking prices or speculation.  You can see how much is still left to do... it's 'unfortunate' math... and the downside is that its the body that is done, so you have to put a lot of trust in what that persons work is like... is the work well documented?  and what is missing on this car? is there an interior?
