RE: Old versus Young - The Future...

For 5 years I was part of a group of 4 mentors who worked on cars one night a week with troubled kids. It was run under the umbrella of the local youth drop in centre. The kids were expected to show up and participate, no cost to them at all. We built an oval dirt track 4 cyl car, an ice racer and a 77 Firebird 350 drag car. It was all funded by donations from local people. Brand new engine, trans etc in the drag car too. It wasn't just old used junk.

I retired from the program almost 2 years ago so I was home with my family more.

We ran the drag car one summer and now the program is on hold because there's no kids showing up any more on the nights they were running it.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? When I was 16, I would have begged them to let me be there more than one night a week. Free car, free admission to the races, entry fee to drive paid for, and free food every week after the evening of working on the car!!! And there is no interest in a program like this???

We often ended up having to get the kids to quit texting and keep at work on the cars some of those nights...

It's been almost 2 years and I still shake my head some times. We put it all in their lap. Maybe that is where we went wrong.

Of all the kids we had come through over the years, only one ever had a real interest in rear wheel drive V8 cars.

I believe your first car is your love in life. Being most kids can't afford our cars and go for a Tuner for their first car. After having kids and some extra money they'll buy a 1995 Civic  getting back to the first car they had.

The prices of some cars are just out of hand.some people watch B Jackson and think that just because a car that might be the same as the one that they have, sold for some high price that they can get the same price for there's.I looked at alot of cars and I heard more then just one time the same car sold on B J for x amount. That doesnt help any.Every time when I take my car out to a car show or just for a ride alot of younger people both guys and girls like the fact that it's old.The comment that i hear most often is that it must be hard to get parts for it.Also the fact that insurance is so high is something that we can't ever change.Unless a younger persons parents are into older cars then the chances of them getting one is slim to none, most people are not about to give up there garage to park an old car in.I heard from one of my friends wives I don't under stand why he parks that old car in the garage when we have to park the new car outside.I wish there would be a way to get more people to get into it more.It truly is a love of the smell of an old car the chrome and the fact that there all unique is what I love about them.

Good point about the old cars being inside. I'm 52. At age 50, our daily drivers finally got to live under a roof. They never had until then. That is part of old cars.

Just remember, without people like ourselves, many many people would have no job. The car hobby injects a pile of money into the economy.

When I go out to the Street Legal races, there usually are two groups of people. The young guys with the Mustangs or Civics or that ugly brown Camary that runs in the low 12s and the older gray haired guys. Seems like the guys in between are raising their families. Groups are about equal. The guys racing the muscle cars seem to be evenly split between young and older, including that guy who was racing a 62 Impala rag top, he was only 71. (12 something) He was quite talkative about my high 13 second car.

On my street, a neighbour's kid is real interested in my car. (15 or so) Other 20 somethings on the street usually stop and chat along with the older guys and girls.

I think if we are friendly and respectful of the younger guys and girls, this hobby will be around for quite a while. Nothing, but nothing, turns me off faster than some guy with a polished up something or other that won't answer any questions or stop for a chat.

Just my opinion.

I work on my car almost daily in my shop, i usually back it out the doors 6-8 feet to be in the sunlight. I get alot gf traffic going by and everyone stops to chat and ask about the car (no wonder I get nothing done) the other day a young lady 18-20 yrs old stops to talk and tells me she has an old Cougar but dislikes it (smiles) she tells me she really wants a 67 Chevelle SS or Beaumont SD (bigger smiles) i think my old 55yr old heart stopped for a moment lol the price of things is all that is stopping her ,that said I dont think old cars and hot rodding will ever die!

Agreed, but as mentioned, I think it will change into the front drive 4 cylinder big horsepower stuff. I never understood how the sound of a 4 cylinder could appeal to anyone...

What are your thoughts?

We all long for the cars of our youth.

That is why the 64-70 true muscle cars (GTO, SS396, 4-4-2, etc.) became so popular with the baby boomer crowd (who of course finally go to the stage in life where they could afford to try to buy back their youth, and the market went nuts).

NOBODY wants a 1950 Ford - that was the generation before, which is rapidly dying off (literally). (Have tried to drive one of those cars? I tried out a 50 Mercury, bigger than a Ford, and could barely fit in it, the ergonomics were so bad. Not to mention driving it which was not much better than a Model A.

Also NOBODY wants a Model A Ford (the very first car I owned was a Model A, and I loved it, but when I went to drive a restored one a few years ago the handling and braking scared the daylights out of me, plus it could never be driven on regular roads, way too slow) except maybe for a few parade drivers. NOBODY wants a 1930 Duesenberg, that was 2 generations ago. Pretty soon the market for 55 Chevys will dry up, as guys like me, who remember them from our youth, die off. The inflated market for 64-70 true muscle cars is collapsing too.

People who think they are "investing" in cars, will end up with unsalable vehicles, unless they can identify the NEXT vintage that the following generation will want, buy those cheap now while they are just used cars, then sell them when the price is bid up, but not keep them past their prime.

$22,000 for a 1950 Ford? His heirs willl end up paying to have it hauled to the crusher.

Dave

My father was an Austin guy.  He never understood the apeal of the big V8.  Eventually his object of beauty was the slant 6.

You know the old story, why Brits drink warm beer?

(drum roll)
Because Lucas makes their refrigerators.

I thought it was neat to see some young rodder guys who were dressed up like they walked out of the late 50's. Greased hair, the jackets, cuffed jeans and boots. And i saw these guys last month at a car show. Talk about embracing the lifestyle! Good for them. I admit i hope that my boy gets the car bug as he grows up. My dad passed his interest of cars on to me and i'd like to be able to do the same. He never pushed it on me, i just took to it. I'll have to remember that as my boy grows up. By the time he is able to drive i'm already scared to know what insurance rates will be. Who knows, in sixteen years he might be on these boards having the same gripes you under 25 guys are having now. Just remember when you talk to him how you felt at his age when he's feeling frustrated.

I laugh whenever I hear these Lucas references as I'm sure the product drove him crazy considering how many defective peices he had in his garage.
On a related note, I'm about to drop off some old '50's Austin magazines at the local Brit car club.  If you (or anyone) is interested drop me a line and I'll send one out to you.  (Otherwise they're gone tomorrow night.)

The way I see it is even the Young Guys love the old cars and wish they could own them, they just don't have the disposable income. Has anyone tryed to buy a home lately...Holy $@*&!!# after the car payment, the mortgage payment, the utilitys, the food, the diapers, the clothes, the insurance, and let's not forget the tool payment for that awesome Snap-On dealer, there is nothing left for a young family. Twenty five years ago when I bought my first house it didn't take One and a half paychecks just to cover the mortgage like it does now. More and more young familys are house broke, and that takes alot of wanabe car owners right off the market...leaving the 40-50 year olds the ones that can afford a car that can be restored...and the wealthy folk that can buy the cars already restored. I think like the stock market..one day the bottom is going to drop out of the bucket of the car market and come back to reality, because there pricing cars out of the average Joe's reach
