Not sure if everyone in Alta is aware of the "Antique Auto" registration?...

I just registered my '66 as an "Antique Auto" here in Alberta.  I took in a couple of old '66 Alta plates along with my registration.  They cross referenced my old plates with my new "Antique Auto" plate in the data base.  I can now install the old '66 plate(s) on my car and keep the new "AA" plate in the trunk.  Now that it's registered as an "AA", I no longer need to pay every year to re-register it.  To summarize, it cost me $38.00 to register the car for life (or until they change the law).
I picked up the '66 plates on ebay for $9.00 each and they are in very, very nice shape.  (Also lucked out in that the '66 plate color was blue and white, the same as the car.)
Just thought I'd share this with the other Alta folk here...

Alberta rules regarding Antique registration

Special Class*

Antique

Permits licensing of vehicles at least 25 years old and only operated as a collectors item in exhibitions, club activities, parades and transportation to and from these activities.

Since I use my vehicle other than the stipulated activities, I didn't think I could use this special class to register my vehicles.

Interesting.  Thanks for posting that as I don't want to give anyone a bad steer.  I asked the gal about the limitations.  She indicated that here uncle has his registered and drives it every day in the summer and he has yet to be questioned.  She seemed to think that it wasn't an issue.  It's registered now.  We'll see what happens.  Club activities might be the saving grace as there are a lot of show and shines in the summer.
Again, thanks for the heads up.

This issue has been raised before.  In Alberta, using the '66 Plates cross referenced to the Antique Auto plates is really only good for club activities, parades, etc.   Driving your vehicle on public roads other than that is really driving without registration.   I realize here in Alberta registration and insurance are 2 different things.   However, with my luck, some kid in his right hand drive Skyline will run a red light, I'll hit him, and somehow this would end up being my fault as I'm driving without valid registration.  It'd be a wise move to also register your vehicle as a regular passenger vehicle, and keep those plates in the car as well - the kid in the Skyline might have a smart uncle lawyer.

MOST OF THE GUYS I KNOW WITH OLD CARS HAVE THE ANTIQUE PLATES AND IT SEEMS TO BE NOT MUCH PROBLEM. I HAD THEM ON MY '66 BISCAYNE AND WAS NEVER BOTHERED. WHEN I SOLD THE CAR I NEVER TRANSFERED THEM THOUGH JUST FOR THE REASON CLINT POINTED OUT. I GOT A LITTLE SCARED ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AS I MOSTLY DRIVE MY OLD CARS LATER IN THE EVENING OR LATE AT NIGHT. CAR SHOWS AND PARADES ARE USUALLY HELD DURING THE DAY. I JUST DIDN'T THINK IT WAS WORTH IT.

Thx for the feedback. Since I've got 'em now, I'll run them for the year and reconsider next spring.
